“I think we both need to increase our estimated tax payments this quarter,” Eric said as he and Rusty had a late lunch at the diner.

“I don’t want to pay any more taxes than I already do,” Rusty said.

“You have two choices, buddy. Increase your estimated payments now, or pay them plus a penalty in April.”

“Isn’t there any way to reduce the taxes?”

“Maybe,” Eric said, “but it involves spending a bunch of money.”

“Tell me how.”

“We can buy a couple of new mowers. If we use accelerated depreciation, that will cut our taxes a bit. And we could store the old mowers in a shed at the nursery and use them as backup. We could also start building at least one permanent greenhouse. That’s something we were planning to do next year, but we could do it now.”

“Let’s do it,” Rusty said.

“Are you referring to mowers or a greenhouse?”
