~ Hillary's POV ~
"Finally done," Hillary looked at the neatly wrapped box, adorned in blue wrapping that hugged its entire form. Carefully, he took the obvious present from his study desk and secured it with his only functioning arm. It took a while to maneuver through the house and finally place the present inside Kevin's room. Though he did take some time to look at his son's face, his handsome visage reflected the perfect genetic heritage he received from his old man.
"He'll be a ladies' man just like me in the old days. Sigh! Or maybe cursed to never find true companionship." He sighed as painful memories flashed, pushing away those thoughts. Slowly, he eased out of his room after finishing some small house chores.
After finishing some small house chores, Hillary decided to close in for the night and headed to his room. In the master bedroom of a two-story building attached to a small PokéMart in the major business street of Saffron City, he stood there, facing a full-body mirror. He looked almost fifty, and when he barely touched his 40s. His hair was long, tangled, greasy, and hung down, and his eyes shone through like they were behind vines. It was all gray; so was his long, mixed-up whiskers. There wasn't any color in his face; where his face showed, it was white; not like another man's white, but a white to make a body sick, a white to make a body's flesh crawl – a tree-toad white, a fish-belly white, the punishment for the sins he committed. A stark reminder of his past. A glorious stump of what was his arm, marred skin crisscrossing his left chest area and the entirety of his back.
Tik! Tick! The sudden noise woke him from his stupor as he turned toward the window where a midget of a Pidgey was peeking at the glass. As if realizing his focus, the tiny bird abruptly flew away as he slumped into the embrace of his bed, another day done and more to come, he guessed.
~ General Pov ~
Kevin woke up to the smell of freshly baked bread and the sweet aroma of what he guessed was Oran Berry syrup, but what caught his eyes first was a blue box positioned on his desk. Yes, today was his birthday. Though having lived with Grandpa Allen in his head had improved his maturity by far and coupled with his experience which only improved it even more, Kevin was still a child at heart. So, what does a newly turned nine-year-old do when he sees a present? Obviously, he quickly rips apart the wrapping, wishing he could unravel the box in a faster way. When the last paper wrap came off and the box opened, what lay there was a ball, a ball almost entirely black with a gold band around the middle as well as a gold button, which carries rings of red on both halves which themselves are flanked by rings of gold. Gripping the Luxury Ball in awe, Kevin finally noticed that the circular light around the capture button was blue, and blue meant only one thing. As if waiting for this moment, his finger subconsciously touched the release button, prompting the ball to burst open in a flair of red, and out came a small, quadrupedal, mammalian Pokémon. It had pinkish-purple fur with darker patches. It had large, spiny ears with teal insides, oversized front teeth, and red eyes.

Looking at the holographic screen before him, Kevin gasped for air in shock. The absurdity of the situation overwhelmed him. 'A motherfucking system, who would have thought?' Those thoughts ran through his mind. When Grandpa Al spoke of this, he thought such a thing was impossible, but having a soul from another world is also in the same realm of impossibilities. As Kevin was lost in thought, Nidoran shook his head as if to clear it then sniffed the air some more. The scent of a human made him turn toward Kevin's direction. Observing the human getting lost in thought, Nidoran became offended. 'How dare this lowly human dare get lost in thought in my presence.' Fueled by this, Nidoran made his most intimidating growl, which he could master, and as intended, Kevin woke up.
"Huh Huh! Oh, shit Nidoran! Aaaah-Hmmm…. I guess I should introduce myself. Hello, and my name is Kevin Oak, and from the looks of it, it seems you are my first partner." Kevin stuttered in shock before pulling his best Ash Ketchum face he could, which seemed to work as Nidoran seemed to ease a little.
"I know you are confused, but based on circumstances, it seems like you and I will be stuck together for a while, so I have a proposition while don't you take a wait and see approach. If you find me unworthy, I promise to release you as soon as possible." He continued, taking advice from the supposed protagonist of this world and the many MCs in the novels in his memory. Nidoran locked his eyes with his as he looked as if he was staring straight into his soul, judging the reliability of his words before moving his little legs toward him. Kevin watched with bated anticipation as Nidoran scooted closer toward him. He stretched his hand in response where Nidoran sniffed his hand then licked it with his pink tongue. Though Kevin didn't know if this was safe since Nidoran are usually renowned for their poison, at this stage, he decided to place his trust in him.
Swoon! He cried in acceptance as the joy brought a smile to Kevin's face. Truthfully, he was shocked. Most of his knowledge comes from the otherworldly memories, and the fact that Pokémon could achieve such sapience was shocking. In his memories, it was widely known that powerful Pokémon achieve sapience to the level equal to human beings, though most Psychic Pokémon exhibit human intellect due to their abilities. But a situation such as Nidoran's was unknown to him.
"It seems you have already managed everything well, but I expected that from my son." A scrappy sound from the door took the duo's attention. Kevin beamed at his father as he suddenly picked up Nidoran in triumph, which shocked the Pokémon, but its intelligence persuaded its ego to allow this disgrace only this once.
"Yes, Dad looks, we are already friends. It's so exciting; I can already imagine the future before us." Kevin said in excitement as he subconsciously squeezed the purple mammalian that was obviously disliking the embrace. Noticing this predicament, Hillary calmed the boy down and made him lower the agitated Pokémon. Then led them for a hearty breakfast. After that and a moment for some random chatter, a serious discussion began.
"Son, now that you have a Pokémon, you are eligible to go to Pokémon school, so I will give you two options. One, transfer from your current school and go to Saffron Pokémon Academy. There you can be secured a future and a ready job once you complete the six-year course
or continue with how things are, but I will personally teach you all I know. Which is it?" Hillary asked while sipping his tea, his eyes closed in waiting as if he already knew the answer to the question.
"Of course, with you, Dad, who else will take care of your carelessness? I really wonder why you ask such questions when you already know the answer like seriously." Kevin replied abruptly.
"And don't try the 'are you sure' nonsense, I already made up my mind." Kevin continued; how could he accomplish his plans if he was confined to Saffron Pokémon Academy? And it's not as if it was any better than his dad. The man is a former regional-level researcher; there's no one better than his dad to teach him.
"Good. Here is the book; I need you to memorize by this week and I left some problems at the end of each book. Feel free to use my computer to research." Hillary finished as he dropped a pile of books out of nowhere on the dining table. While enjoying the grimace on his son's face, he continued with his tea.
