Chapter Sixteen

Madeline’s POV

The ride home is quiet.

Andrew keeps his eyes on the road and I keep my focus on the cars passing by. I wonder for a moment if I should count them like the stars in the sky. Instead, I keep my attention on the dim outline of the full moon.

It seems to fall out of view before catching up with our car once more, glimmering behind each tree that obstructs my view. The sound of beeping and grumbling car engines threaten to lull me to sleep, but they’re late.

Before I know it, we are back at my apartment. Andrew parks and we exit the car before turning to each other awkwardly.

How do you end dates you wish could last forever?

I’m not sure whether to hug, or kiss, or wave, or extend my hand for a formal handshake. Luckily, Andrew decides before me, whispering in my ears his goodbye.

“Hey, I hope you had fun Madeline, maybe we can do something similar again someday.” He brushes the back of his head nervously.
