“This is why I’m never ever bringing a boyfriend home to meet you,” Benji whisper shouted. “If I ever get one,” he added.
I sucked my lower lip into my mouth to stop the threatening giggle from erupting.
“What?” Henry’s hand flew to his chest. “You don’t want them to meet me? Am I embarrassing you?”
“Darlings,” Mr. Parsons said and laid a hand on each of their shoulders. I could tell he was used to being the voice of reason in their family. “Maybe we should talk about this at home?” They both looked up at him; Benji’s cheeks were flushed and Henry’s face was set in a sad smile. Mr. Parsons cupped each of their cheeks and swiped a gentle thumb under their eyes. “Okay?”
“Okay, Dad.”
“Yes, sweetie.”
“Thank you.” Mr. Parsons’s gaze was full of indulgence and warmth. Then he looked at Vee and me. “Thank you for your business, gentlemen. On behalf of my entire family, thank you.”
