The Drive

*******

"You're up late." He said not looking at her, sitting down with his legs crossed at the fire place.

"How long have you been waiting?" She asked because it was still too early and it was the earliest she could wake and he was saying she was late.

"Thirty minutes."

"Thirty minutes?" She screamed in shock with eyes wide open. She looked at her watch and it was just few minutes passed three in the morning. "Then why didn't you just wake me up?"

"We'll be late. Let's go." He said and got up walking away.

She sighed and shook her head and followed after him.

The drive was fast and the speed was making her get tensed.

"Are we going to fight those creatures?"

"Why do you ask?" He said, his eyes never leaving the road.

"You're driving at almost the same speed as you were that night"

"Are you scared?"

"At the creatures, yes. At your driving speed, a bit tensed up."

"Should I slow down?"

"No." She said hoping that she said the right thing. After a while she spoke. "Why do we have to leave so early? Are those creatures coming to get at us? But what if they spot us on the road?" She asked and looked around the windows as her heartbeat fastened a little.

What she experienced was really a traumatizing thing. She wished that won't happen to her again. A memory from that night flashed in her head.

"Th..there was a man who came to rescue me when those creatures were attacking me." She said looking at him trying to recall who the man was. "I...I didn't get to see his face. But did you by any chance met him? And...who carried me back home? And what happened to the creatures and the man who saved me? And my body, I..I can't feel any pain anymore. I can't even see a mark on my neck. How..did it all happen?"

All of a sudden, the car took a break with force, screeching it's tyres on the ground till it came to an halt.

His expressionless yet cold face looked at her. "I recalled vividly, telling you not to file up questions for me right? And I got to answer one of your questions. I think that should be more than okay." He said in a cold tone.

"But I...."

"Whatever that had happened to you was all your fault. If you had stayed at home like I told you, you wouldn't have seen those and if you hadn't gotten out from the car, you wouldn't have been in that trouble either."

"I....."

"I don't want any further questions Jane. I warned you before going there."

"I....."

"No further questions. Do you understand?"

She saw the irritated look on his face. She knew he was right. Despite all the warning signs he gave to her, she chose to go and she had no right to speak to him about the things that happened that night.

"I'm sorry. I understand." She said looking and sounding really sorry.

Despite her saying that, her body was itching a lot to fire endless bullets of questions at him.

"Good girl." He said and drove the car in all full speed.

She was burning up inside to speak, but knowing the man by her side, he wouldn't dare utter a single word.

The drive was a long silent one. She had been playing games and watching some movies in her phone not to get totally bored up. The sun was now out fully, shining brightly and the roads were busy with humans found out to their different destinations. Her stomach growled and in few minutes, the car stopped at a small restaurant. He got out of the car and Jane followed. Because it was already close to noon, the restaurant was already filled up.

Everybody paused whatever they were doing and stared at him the moment he stepped in. He didn't mind anyone and walked up to the waiting point to order some food.

"What do you want to eat?" He asked Jane who was standing by his side.

She searched the board and a big smile lit her face in delightment as she saw hamburgers. She was happy they sold junks too, especially burgers.

"Burgers." She said smiling.

"Is that all?" He asked to be sure.

"Yes." She said nodding her head in happiness.

"We'll have burgers." He said to the waitress who was just standing in amazement drooling after him.

The look he gave her was so deadly cold and that jolted her back to reality.

"Y...yes sir. Anything else sir?" The waitress asked.

He didn't say anything and walked away when Jane said something, making him halt his steps staring at her.

"Six please. I'll have six burgers."

He blinked his eyes twice, staring at her.
