Snip.
Spin.
Measure.
"Interesting." Atropos said, gleefully snipping off the end of a golden thread with her newly-sharpened shears.
"Who knew she was going to do that?" Lachesis asked, to no one in particular.
We did. Since, after all, we are the fates: Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos. Clotho spins the thread of life, Lachesis measures the allotted length, and I, Atropos, cut the thread off with my shears. Personally, I think my job is the most important amongst the three of us.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Whatever. This is just more work for me, anyways. I have to spin more thread for all of those annoying gods again. Ugh. I hate my job." Clotho complained, producing string after string at an insane speed.
"Hey! What about me? I have to measure the length of their new mortal lives too!" Lachesis said, "My job is complicated and significant too!"
"Heh. You guys enjoy yourselves. I don't have much to do for a while, after all. Just a few mortal lives here and there. I won't have to worry about those Olympians for a few years." I reclined backwards, snipping threads wherever or whenever needed.
I may be the oldest of the three of us, but Clotho, the youngest, and Lachesis, the middle child, both agree that I'm the most immature. I wonder why. I don't know about them, but I personally, am very excited to see the fate of the gods of Olympus in the mortal world.
"They may believe that they are changing their fates." Lachesis said.
"But we were, are, and always will be the true masters of their futures." Clotho finished, waving her hands with a flourish.
"Aw...but that would be boring!" I complained, seemingly with no purpose, despite the plan brewing in my head.
"Then what do you suggest, Atropos?" Lachesis asked.
"We could try that." Clotho said, reading my mind.
"Exactly! We should try that!"
"No." Lachesis stated, like the party pooper she always was. "If we did that, fate would be out of our control! What if everything goes south?"
"She has a point." Clotho agreed.
"But guys! It would be so boring knowing exactly what will happen to those people! I'm bored!"
"No." Lachesis.
"We could try it..." Clotho.
"We're doing it!" Me. "I don't care what happens, we're doing it. I'm tired of watching this boring, old, consecutive tale. Is a breath of fresh air too much to ask for?"
"Yes." said Lachesis, with as much sarcasm possible for a person with nothing better to do but be sarcastic.
The thing that we were all talking about is something Clotho and I thought of on a whim. Since we were so bored of knowing each and every thing about any mortal at any given time, we created the "Blinder", a device that stops us fates from interfering with the path chosen mortals walk. Simply put, those selected mortals technically get to control their own fates. The one problem with this system is, if they get out of control, we cannot do anything to stop them from destroying time entirely.
I trust that most of the Olympian gods won't have a clue as to what's going on, but Athena is another story. She is the most likely to maintain her memories of her godhood, be it entirely or in bits and pieces, making her a potential threat to the humans. A god's soul is infused with their powers. Thus, if one of the gods were to remember their past godhood or tap into their powers, the mortal world would be faced with a danger never seen before. But I still believe that it would be fun to finally be able to watch a television series without knowing the ending before it was even filmed.
"Fine."
Clotho and I jerked our heads towards Lachesis. Operation Surprise is a go!
I thought nothing of it at the time, but if only I had known what the future would bring...
I would not have made that choice at all.
