Beau circled Jude like a predator circles their prey. A sick, satisfied smile plastered across his face. My father, however, wore displeasure like a tailored suit.

He watched the scene through narrowed eyes as he propped himself against the wall with his arms crossed. His eyes looked at me from time to time, judging my reaction. How had I never noticed his eyes were so soulless?

My father just watched quietly. Beau had just taken the opportunity to land a kick into Jude’s ribs when I screamed out. I couldn’t watch it anymore.

“That’s enough. Both of you,” my father warned.

I don’t know what I had expected out of Beau. He wasn’t the type of person who liked to be ordered around. When my father spoke, I saw Beau back down obediently for the first time. It was as if my father flipped a switch, and Beau became someone else.
