“Yep, Waldo and his wife Josie. He’s ma watch goose.”
Adam had noticed as they drove along how Brendan’s accent was becoming more Texan.
“Watch goose?”
Brendan laughed again. “You’ll see.”
Adam had a thought that made the freedom he was experiencing retreat a little.
“Who takes care of the ranch while you’re gone so much?”
“Gene and Roy handle the animals …”
Images of the cowboy movie stars of the nineteen forties and fifties popped into Adam’s head. Smirking, he asked, “Do they sing, too?”
“They’re better at handlin’ the animals,” Brendan chuckled. “…and there’s Maricia. She takes care of the house.”
Adam thought for a moment, then said, “What are they gonna think of …us?”
Brendan laughed, reached up and pulled Adam into a quick kiss as they rode along.
“Gene and Roy’ll say, ‘Bout time.’”
Adam looked at Brendan, puzzled.
