Chapter 98

INT. - PETZ FLAGSHIP STORE - MORNING

A half an hour later, she stood behind the counter at the flagship Petz chain store, silver pen poised over her notepad as Steven Stranford sank against the wall behind him and shook his head, face pale, eyes tight. She found it odd Harold kept his office in one of his stores, her estimation of the man rising with the unofficious and casual way his staff acted, despite their sniffling when they looked her way.

"I tried to reach him last night," Steven said, head down as he stared at his feet. Gerri's gut twisted gently in protest. It was hard to read people when they wouldn't meet her eyes. He finally looked up and her instincts settled. "I knew them both, you know."

Gerri nodded. "I'll ask you the same question I've asked everyone else," she said. "Did either one of them have enemies I should know about?"
