Chapter 40

Ao coughed "...well based on the reports, aside from a few 100 or so Hozuki clansman who managed to escape thanks to the warning of a few kunoichi, everyone else from the Hozuki main camp is dead. As for the Hoshigaki clan main camp it has been confirmed that no one made it alive. "

"Based on the investigations that have been conducted we have lost at least 10,000 shinobi tonight." Said Ao, his voice somber and his fists clenched.

"Thank you, Ao," said Mei Terumi as she glanced towards the rest of patriarchs seated at the table.

"Now you all understand why I have called you here in the middle of the night. We have a serious problem on our hands"

"Do we have any clues as to whoever did this?" asked Kaneko Yuki, a middle-aged man with blue hair.

Ao shook his head "No whoever did this covered his tracks very well. It may be a group of people or just a single shinobi. We have yet to determine."

"It's most likely a team of shinobi that did this. There is no way a single shinobi did all this." Said Kurihara Kaguya. His amusement evident in his tone. The Kaguya clan were known for being Lunatics who craved war and bloodshed and their leaders tended to be the most bloodthirsty and strongest of them all.

"Not true, there are shinobi capable of singlehandedly wiping out entire forces. Have you forgotten about shinobi like Hashirama and Madara?" said Kaneko Yuki. A young man slightly older than Terumi in his early twenties. The previous patriarch had died in an ambush and hence he had to take up the mantle.

"Yeah, but those were the shinobi of old. Already dead and rotted in the ground. Other than the Kages of the five great villages no one else is capable of causing such death. Even I know that. " said Kurihara Kaguya in a mocking tone. Watching the forces of those who used to think themselves superior to the Kaguya clan suffer filled him with joy. Besides the more chaos there was the greater the chance of blood being spilled.

The rest of the patriarchs, familiar with the behaviours of the Kaguya clan, simply held in their anger not wanting to escalate the situation.

"Kaneko is right. There have been cases of single shinobi possessing the means to wipe out entire clans. Just look at the recent case of Itachi Uchiha wiping out the entire Uchiha clan leaving only his brother alive" said Mei Terumi earning a few nods from some of the patriarchs.

"So, we know that the enemy could be singular or multiple. Probably from a shinobi village. Question is which village would have enough motive to attack us."

"No, they aren't from a shinobi village as they would bear no benefit in attacking us given how we are located quite a distance away from the mainland."

"….. Unless they wanted to gain access to our waterways. Konohagakure and Kumogakure could have motive to do so."

"No! Even taking over Kirigakure to serve as a second base wouldn't make sense as the island is too far from the mainland to be capable of serving as a support base."

"It could be the bloodline eradicators who hired a rogue shinobi or a team of them to attack our forces. We all know that there are some powerful rogue shinobi capable of taking on even Kages" said Nomura Hozuki, his face and eyes icy cold giving the rest a chilling sensation.

"Like Itachi Uchiha and the newly rising mercenary organisation 'The Akatsuki'"

"Exactly" said Nomura Hozuki

"Yes this makes the most sense.."

"Agreed..."

The rest of the patriarchs nodded their heads in agreement.

"So now that we have a theory of who attacked us. What do we do?"

"We should gather all of our forces into one place. The reason we split up was to have more methods and geographical advantages of dealing with our enemies but now it's only serving our ninjas heads on a platter " suggested Ao.

The rest of the patriarchs nodded.

"So we are in agreement. We will retract all our forces back to the main camp where we will be better able to keep an eye on the them. However this will cause us to lose the advantage in territory and makes us one big target though this shouldn't matter as with our entire forces present under one camp, not even Itachi Uchiha or the Akatsuki would dare attack us. "said Mei Terumi and after discussing a few other issues the meeting ended.

...Meanwhile in the bloodline eradicators camp another meeting was going on.

"This is a great opportunity to strike back at those worthless bloodline forces. Based on the report from our spies, two of their large camps were eradicated which puts the war in our favour." Said Fujioka Byakura, his face filled with excitement. Since the war began, the bloodline eradicators had slowly been losing. This was due to a lot of factors such as possessing less talented shinobi and also possessing no Kekei Genkai users which made it harder for them to see a way of winning this war with each passing day but now due to the eradication of two large camps by a mysterious shinobi, they now possessed a chance of turning this war to their favour. 

"That's great and all but do we have any idea as to which village caused this?" asked Nagai Funato.

Fujioka Byakura shook his head "No idea but I have a feeling it has to do with that chakra Yagura sensed two months ago. We didn't know why a Kage level individual had come to Kirigakure at the time, but now he or she must have been the scout for tonight's attack"

"Makes sense." Said Teruwo Momochi. "This means that it's a team of shinobi that did this and given that the shinobi villages would love to have those bloodline freaks in their villages, there is no way they would attack the bloodline clans which means that its probably an independent organisation."

"Do you think it's the Akatsuki?"

"Most likely, they are the only mercenary group with the capacity to pull this off. "

"What if it's not the Akatsuki?" asked Yagura Karatachi.

"What do you mean?" Everyone looked at their leader Yagura.
