The First Shift

Zev released his claw as he cried. His father's body was barely half as big as his. His whole body shook as he looked at his father, who was still smiling at him.

"Dad, please don't make do it..."

"Please Zev, for Rivendell..." Glendir whispered.

He opened his eyes, lifted his hand, and immediately sank his claws into his father's chest. Then, he dragged his father's heart out of his chest while closing his eyes. Zev's body felt strangely intense. It was so strong, and he could tell how his eyes changed. He thought it too. He held his father's chest as he changed back into a human.

"Dad..."

Zev turned around when something loudly fell to the floor. He saw Jody at the door with both hands over her mouth, looking terrified. When their eyes met, she turned her back on him and ran away. Zev carefully put his father's heart on his chest and ran after Jody. When he left the room, he saw Jody rushing out of the house.
