"Well, doing that is the ethical thing to do. We should make people think that we're dating."
Zev saw Jody's response. He knew what he said surprised her, so he defended himself immediately before she could think of something else.
"Should we pretend?"
"Yeah. Also, I don't want people to look down on you for being friends with Brian."
"You think we should put on a show?"
Seeing Jody's reaction, he assumed she was upset or disappointed with his idea. "I don't want to disappoint my dad. I'm just protecting you."
Jody didn't understand, but Zev's words hurt her. It makes him look like he has to care for and protect her because that's what Glendir told him to do.
"We don't need to pretend, Zev," said Jody. "Everyone understands what we are. They'll be more surprised if we suddenly become close. Pretending is not a solution." Zev didn't answer. "Don't worry. I won't tell Brian that thing that could hurt me."
