How to make leads proactive 101

Clair was perturbed. She got all antsy. She tried to punch me throwing her fist in the air but sadly missed. 'Hehe'

"Huff, is that the only thing that comes to your mind?" she cried.

"No there are plenty of things regarding you that come to my mind and trust me you wouldn't want to know any of them" I smirked.

She got angry all the more. This is so funny.

"Anyone care to explain why that guardian thingy went poof!?"

"Of course because you killed it and since they are made of nothing but mana they certainly will disappear upon their demise" she took out the pearl that she had put away, "Look this is the heart of that monster, upon killing it this is the only thing it drops"

"killed it? I didn't even swing my arm properly"

"Of course this is the cause of your monstrous strength. The guardians of this weak forest don't stand a chance against you"

She then went ahead and put that pearl inside her mouth. "These are edible and a good substitute of the food source."

"Hey, that was my kill! Tch" I clicked my tongue.

Claire raised her brows. "Sorry I didn't know that you were that hungry" she giggled.

"Me hungry? Not yet. But that means you can leech off on me. Everyone should reap their own fruits of labor"

"What do you mean?" Clair inquired.

"It is simple. If you want food you have to kill them yourself! I am your friend therefore I will be there to help you in your need but that doesn't mean I am gonna spoil you!"

Yeah, this is for her own good. Those who rely too much on others end up not being able to do anything by themselves.

"But... but I have never fought before!" Clair tried to defend herself. Nope, this ain't gonna work today. Not after you made me climb that damn wall.

"Everything has its first-time dear" I replied.

"But I have received no training. Even trained soldiers fail to fight them"

"Then you will get trained by losing against them. Don't worry I will save you from any fatal injuries but other than that you have to fight yourself!"

"But..." she said looking down. She finally gave in knowing that there was no way out now. At least she could be assured of her life.

"No buts"

"Okay I will try," she said as she took out a knife from her bag.

"Good girl"

She was making an expression as if she was about to cry. It's always fun to tease her.

"Let's get moving," I said, "Please show the way"

Dejected Clair walked ahead and I followed her.

....

A bit later five of those... what should I call them, decapitated Drus? Anyway, five of them attacked us. Well, I don't even feel like fending them but since they were annoying at least I killed four of them and left one for Clair.

Collecting those four pearls, I tossed one in my mouth. It melted as soon as it touched my tongue. But for some strange reason, I felt strangely full. Well, I wasn't hungry, to begin with, so I guess they work to some extent.

I glanced to my side to find Clair trying to fight that Drus. Although she wasn't doing anything particular, just stepping aback clearly scared of it.

The Drus approached her like a zombie its hands high up in the air. The only difference was its steps not being sluggish. From what I can guess it would strangle her in one go if she gets caught in its arms. They are weak.

"You ain't gonna kill it if all you do is step back"

She understood what I meant, causing her to go for a stab. But man her hands were shaking so much cause of fear that she missed it. 'You are gonna make dagger-wielder wish that they died' was what I thought.

Missing her move the Drus caught hold of her and was about to strangle her. It has good strength if not anything else. But, before it could do anything I kicked it hard. It disappeared with a *poof* leaving behind its heart.

Clair was having goosebumps. With disheveled hair, she was sweating buckets out of fear.

I rubbed her back.

"It is okay, it is okay, I am here. It was a good effort for the first time" I tried to cheer her with empty words. Well, that's the only thing I can do lest she would suffer later.
