Annoyed with herself, Zoe started a conversation with Christine, who was seated next to her.

“… they’re out of danger, but my dad will need extensive rehabilitation for his damaged spine. My mother had a head wound, and now she has some memory problems, but the doctors think she should get better in time…”

Zoe could barely pay attention anymore. She could finally feel Martin’s gaze on her—she wouldn’t mistake that feeling for anything else—and it was a struggle not to turn her head.

After a few moments, she lost the battle with herself and shot her a quick look.

But Martin wasn’t looking at her. He was leaned back in his chair, sipping his wine idly as he conversed with Xandro.
