Past and Future

<Kairo POV>

A loud banging woke me up.

Someone was knocking on my door.

Quickly throwing on some clothes, I go out to check who it was. I couldn't help but be suspicious due to what happened last night. Numerous thoughts flew past in my mind before I finally got to the old door of my apartment.

Looking through the peephole, I don't see anyone. Manipulating the air outside, I try to see if anyone was hiding or planning to ambush me. Yesterday's events have caused me to become a lot more cautious.

There was no one, it seemed like I was being overly paranoid. No one should be able to link what happened yesterday to me.

Opening the door, a shipping package rested before me. I don't remember ordering anything recently...

I kick towards the box before quickly hiding behind the door. Seeing how nothing happened, I felt pretty stupid reflecting upon my actions.

Rushing out, I grab the box and rush back into my apartment slamming the door behind me, hoping no one saw what just occurred. I don't wanna go to a mental institution just yet.

The package was pretty heavy, but what freaked me out more was the fact that, unlike normal shipping packages, there were no addresses or anything.

With a flick of my hand, the box was cut open with high-pressure air. These abilities are rather convenient. Imagine the effort I'd need to exert to walk all the way to the kitchen, grab a knife, before walking back to cut the tape on the box.

Inside was a blue crystal. It was probably the prettiest thing I have seen.

I was instantly enthralled, it was clear, yet opaque, bright, yet darker than the abyss. A mysterious substance seemed to gracefully dance through the crystal, making it seem almost alive.

Suddenly I saw the glow again, this time, however, it wasn't just a light whitish outline like with the homeless person.

A blinding golden light surrounded the crystal.

It felt like I have just seen the love of my life, my heart was pounding, I unconsciously reached out with my hand.

But something made me hold back. I felt that once I touched it, I can no longer go back.

My intuition has rarely been wrong, this will open up a new chapter in my life, but do I really want that?

[Three Years Ago]

A happy family of five was going on a road trip.

Father had finally gotten a break from his work as a manager for an offshore drilling rig. The minivan was packed to the brim with bags, snacks, and two surfboards.

"Brother, Brother!! I want the barbeque chips! Can you grab them for me please?" Sasha, my little sister asked.

Since our parents sat in the front, and my two sisters were spoiled, they sat in the second row. Which landed me in the unfortunate situation of being pushed to the back to sit with our large collection of different snacks for the trip.

"If you want them, come back and get them yourself!" I retorted before grabbing a bag for myself and munching on them loud enough for her to hear.

"Hey! That's not fair! Humph! You're bullying me again." She pouted in response.

Chuckling a bit at her cute expression, I threw one at her. She just grabbed it and ignored me, seemingly still angry for messing with her.

"I also want one!" The other twin yelled, having been awoken by the noise.

"We haven't even made it halfway there and you guys have eaten almost all the chips," I reached out and pinched her cheeks, "Look at how fat you've gotten!"

"You're the fat one! If you weren't so large, we could have fitted more chips in the back!" Ashley retorted pushing my hands away.

I looked down at how I've been basically left to fit on half a seat of space. If I was fat then there are no skinny people in the world.

Too tired to argue, I just ignore them.

Looking at how Sasha was enjoying her chips, Ashley squeezed back to claim one for herself.

It was then that our car suddenly braked, I could hear my mother yelling.

Screech! Bam!

Loud noises and acrid smells overloaded my senses before the pain hit.

I could still remember every moment of that day very vividly.

A commercial shipping truck had popped a tire and swerved into oncoming traffic on the highway. It hit three cars before hitting ours, even so, it hardly lost momentum.

I received the news after waking up in the hospital. My parents did not survive since the front of the car bore the brunt of the crash.

But my biggest regret in life was making Ashley come to the back, since she wasn't in her seat, the crash sent her flying towards the front. Killing her instantly.

Sasha was still in a coma to this day, every time I visit her, I'd be reminded of my failings.

Most of the money from my parent's life insurance went towards hospital bills for my sister.

I want to see her smile again...

For years now, I could only wait, hoping for that phone call from the hospital would arrive, only to be disappointed over and over again.

I no longer want to be helpless, I don't want to be passive and depend on others.

No!

Since I've been given a chance, I will seize it!

My hand was now firmly grasping the crystal.

I activated my power again. An uncontrolled torrential flow of energy ravaged my body.
