Chapter 9

I had a flash of the same scene, but with Miss Baxter holding the door of that old convertible Moona said she saw in one of her mom’s photographs. The more I thought about it, Moona was probably right about her kink being passed down the family tree.

“I hope she doesn’t mind the change,” Hasiba said.

She didn’t say about the necklace, but I knew what she meant. Just like the jewelry store didn’t do thatkind of piercing, they also didn’t do anything as pedestrian as a simple leather string. We walked out with the captive pearl on a sterling silver hoop instead.

“I’m sure it’s fine,” I said. “But it was a good idea you had to save the leather. There’s probably lots of memories in it.”

“I hope she likes it.”

“She will.” Not that I knew anything about it, but Moona seemed like she could use the reassurance.
