James went still and Lola sensed his initial confusion. He turned fully and asked, "You don't have to make up things to make me accept Max anymore. I now know who the enemy is and I have accepted him to be my brother-in-law. At least, he's a man that you are safe with."
Lola stood up and went to him. She looked into his eyes, searching for his understanding of her sincerity. She couldn't have made up such a serious issue just to make him stop opposing Max.
"I'm telling you the truth. His name is Sampson, and he was married to our mother; that was why she never removed his name from hers. They were in love. He told me the kind of person Jane was." She explained to him, taking his hand and wrapping it in hers.
