A Legal Crime

As soon as Diane was formally introduced to the lawyers by Christian and took her seat, they got straight to the consultation segment.

"Mrs. Sanders, Mr. Knowles informed us that you needed our services regarding a prenup gone wrong after filing a divorce from your husband, Mr. Phillip Sanders. Can you give us the full details of your marriage and what led to the divorce?"

Right as the lawyers asked that question, Diane gave Christian a look as she fiddled with her fingers. Her body language clearly stated that he was uncomfortable to have that kind of deep conversation with him present.

Everyone understood that, but these gestures only made Christian suspect there was more to her divorce.

He could remember her reaction when he asked what led to her husband's cheating. For him, it seemed like she had a part to play and the fault did not solely rest on her husband.

Regardless of her undying curiosity, Christian acted towards Diane's hint and rose to his feet. Releasing a soft sigh, he met his lawyer's gazes and said to them, "I will leave you to talk." Then to Diane, he added, "I will be in the study if you need me."

Diane did not utter a single word to the lawyers until she was sure that Christian had safely made it to his study room.

Finally, she turned to the lawyers and unclasped her fingers. She started telling the story of her marriage to Phillip Sanders without mentioning the circumstances surrounding their union in the first place.

After listening to her for a while, one of the lawyers; a woman who looked to be in her late 40's spoke. "We can see where the issue that needs our attention is. But if you don't mind, can you tell how you and your husband met?"

"Through our parents." Diane lowered her gaze.

She was surprisingly too calm talking about her relationship with Phillip which on a different day, would have stressed her out and changed her countenance for the worst.

The lawyers noted her answer and went straight to another question. "You caught your husband cheating on you, and from what you recounted earlier, you don't have any evidence to prove his infidelity. But what was your husband's reason for cheating when you confronted him?"

It was the same female lawyer asking the question as the two male older lawyers watched from the sides.

Now, things were beginning to get very awkward for Diane. As a doctor, she wasn't naturally shy to some kind of conversations thanks to her career but as this one concerned her directly, she didn't know where to start.

First of all, the answer to that question was not popular and second of all, she was ashamed of herself, so she was grateful to the lawyers who gave her the space and patiently waited until she was ready to continue speaking.

"For the two years Phillip and I were married, we never had sex."

The three lawyers exchanged glances before facing her. "And why is that? I believe your union was never agreed to be a sexless marriage otherwise you wouldn't have filed for divorce with the reason of infidelity," the plump male lawyer with a few grey strands on his jet-black hair asked.

Diane shook her head. "No. It was never an agreement. It just happened. Although we weren't emotionally detached, he just couldn't ever seem to go in."

At this point, the lawyers knew that they had met a case that was not common, and they were interested in finding out more even though it had no real connection to the main case in dispute.

They were curious, so they asked further and luckily for them, Diane chose to open up properly.

"Does your family know about this?" The female lawyer asked as she uncrossed her legs and folded her arms. She had her subtle gaze fixed on her.

Diane shook her head as she met her gaze. "They are still in the dark about this problem, but they are aware of the prenup issue and the divorce."

Her mother would ruin her mentally if she were to find out that she was the very reason Phillip cheated in the first place.

Her life will be deemed physically and mentally over and if taken to the hospital, she will be announced clinically dead according to her mother's terms.

"I'm sorry to ask this, but before you got married, have you in the past experienced anything like this before?" the second male lawyer who has been quiet all this time, asked the question with straight brows.

Again, Diane replied with a 'no' as there was nothing much left for her to say.

"When you noticed this problem, did you go to the hospital to get yourself checked?" the second lawyer asked her with a determined gaze.

Although all these questions were not necessary to deal with the prenup issue; as her lawyers from this day onwards, they had to know every important detail.

"I booked an appointment with the gynaecology department in my hospital to get myself checked out after my husband failed to penetrate me for the hundredth time. We were supposed to go for the appointment together, but I found out about his infidelity and I never showed up for my doctor's appointment."

Diane had to reveal that she did other things with Phillip while they were still together apart from sex.

Later on, she had to show the lawyers a copy of the Prenup between her and Phillip from her phone since she didn't come prepared with the prenup.

Diane didn't hold back answering all the questions regarding the prenup but in the end, the lawyers did not give her any conclusive solution.

"Even though your husband went on to transfer his major assets to his eldest sister after both families had agreed to the prenup and bore witness to it, he didn't break any law as he already did the transfer before you two legally got married," the grey-haired lawyer said.

Diane only thought that Phillip's sneaky wicked actions could be termed, 'Legal stealing.'

The female lawyer chipped in, "He would have been penalized if he did the transfer of assets after you two got married and the validity of the prenup kicked in."

Diane's mind raced as an unpleasant feeling pulled at the pit of her stomach. She didn't know when she blurted out, "Does this mean you can't do anything to help me? I don't want to split anything with him. I can die if that man actually gets to claim something from my assets."

Diane wasn't joking. She would probably kill herself before her mother came for her.

"Definitely, we will find a solution, but we don't have a lot of options yet. We will rub minds with Mr. Knowles and get back to you as soon as possible for a second meeting to further discuss the idea we picked," the female lawyer said while giving her a reassuring smile.

Diane actually fell for that lie of having even a solution to the prenup case. In her mind, she no longer had to worry much so she went to the study to inform Christian the meeting had ended before she picked up her bag and left.
