Flashback
"I would never allow my son to be close to that man and his family," Angelo's mother said to her friend before coughing profusely. She had been sick for some years, and the little money that they had could only be used for food and not for things such as medical-related treatments.
The house that they lived in was situated in the very poorest parts of Sicily, and even though the people around them were poor as well, Angelo and his mother were among the poorest, and often they did not have bread to eat.
"But you cannot continue to live like this," her best friend told her. Aunt Maria had been his mother's closest friend for as long as Angelo could remember. Oftentimes, Angelo will jump for joy in the shaky house that often leaks from the roof whenever he jumped too much. Aunty Maria had always made sure to visit with a loaf of bread and some milk to help both Angelo and his mother get through the day.
