But as Shane continued speaking, Lucky began to feel like he hadn’t completely fucked up everything in his life. Stella was still at his side, and Shane didn’t bear any grudges toward him.

“One time, the three of us were at the Bellagio because Stella had a craving for some of the chocolate from the patisserie. There was a couple standing off the side of the front desk who’d lost everything at the tables and were trying to figure out how they were going to pay for their room. Lucky didn’t even hesitate. He pulled out his wallet, handed over all the cash in it, and gave it to them…”

Stella leaned in and whispered, “He left out the part about how hot the guy was and you were hoping to hook up with them later.”

Lucky snorted. “He wants us to have a little bit of dignity in death, apparently. Or maybe he has a bit more decorum than to start a laundry list of all the people we’ve slept with.”
