Chapter 22

Shane had selected the largest room in the funeral home. Rows and rows of comfortable looking chairs filled the room. Two closed caskets sat at the front of the room, the ends meeting and forming a wide V. A podium stood in the middle. Lucky thought Shane planned on speaking, but he didn’t know if anybody else was. A CD of organ music played dully in the background. It didn’t sound anything like the party mix Lucky had chosen.

“I think this is only one step away from a stuffy church service,” Lucky said to Stella as they settled in the back row.

Stella twisted around to try and see through the open doors leading to the front hall. “He didn’t even put out the hors d’oeuvres like we asked him to. And where’s the bar?”

“Shane told me that he thought a bar was inappropriate, given the situation. I pointed out that we could just hire limos or cabs for all the mourners, but he wasn’t convinced.”
