Chapter 78

Chapter 78

I have seen many monsters in these two years, but they don't come close to describing these ones. Even the large kobold who secreted filth would lose to these guys in terms of ugliness. The dungeon break happened about three minutes ago, and mermen are still pouring out of the dungeon.

Even though most of them were heading towards the city, some would stray over to our side. I wish they hadn't though. They are the ugliest creatures I have ever seen. There is a race called mermaids. A beautiful race that is desired by many. Some say their beauty is on par with the elves.

I have never seen one but from what I have read, mermaids have the upper body of a human and the lower body of a fish. They are said to be so beautiful that once someone looks at them, they are captivated. But when I look at this sea species, the only words that come to my mind are revolting, ugly, and disgusting.

Mermen are mostly about one meter tall with a lanky build and long arms that reach their knees. Hunched backs and ugly faces with sharp jaws showing out of their mouth makes me want to cleanse my mind of their image. Now I know why this dungeon is the one with the most break records. No one wants to hunt these ugly revolting-looking creatures.

The reason they are heading towards the city is because of the artifact that attracts monsters towards itself. This artifact was invented because when a break would happen, most of the monsters would scatter around which made it hard to deal with them. So, these artifacts were installed in the cities which are in charge of the dungeon. Not to mention it was easy to kill them using the city walls' defense.

While I was mulling it over, a group of three mermen spotted us and started running in our direction. Our group consisted of seven people. The viscount who was a swordsman, two tank-type awakened and two mages, and one archer including me. They were all high-ranking officials and they all belonged to the Heraiz faction, and they were Carla's subordinates.

One would expect our group to be large because of the situation, but for some reason, the viscount and the guild manager said that a small group with each type of awakened, works best against the mermen boss. And if I have to say, this group is pretty balanced.

Viscount for attacking, the two tanks for taking damage because of their defense, one ice-attribute mage for offense and depending on the situation for defense even, one earth-attribute for defense, and one archer for long-range attacks.

The viscount didn't do anything when these mermen were charging at us. Attacking them right now would be good to reduce risk but if we kill them now, there were chances of other mermen discovering us. When they were in range for attacking and not getting noticed, the ice mage simply froze the ground to stop their movements and the archer behind us finished them with an arrow for each of them.

We didn't encounter any more of them and after about five minutes into the break, the boss monster finally appeared. When I saw the boss, the mermen before started seeming normal. My mind has been tainted. I will need to see Cynthia naked for a whole night to forget this thing.

It was a two meter tall monster and unlike the other mermen, it wasn't lanky but buff. A round face with gills and sharp teeth, with distorted ears, it was a horrendous sight to see. I suddenly wanted to drop all my plans and get out of here. There is no way in hell that I would engage with that thing. I would be scarred for life.

[Mermen General Level 61

Once a beautiful existence that ruled over the sea with the other two sea kings, was banished from the sea along with its race because of its deformity. Yet even after its deformity, it maintained its strength. Its blessing and build makes it harder for physical or magical attacks to work against it.

Skills: Water barrage, Claw swipe, Brute strength, Berserk

Weaknesses: None

Strong against: Physical and magical damage]

The hell! What is with this monster? Is it really that hard to deal with it? Since it was a sea monster, I thought it would be weak against fire, but it seems because of some blessing, it's strong against magical attacks.

The monster came out and stood straight for a while before roaring with its full might. It was a very loud roar and I think every citizen in the city must have heard it clearly. We covered our ears with mana to protect ourselves against it. There was mana mixed in its roar and it was dangerous for our internals if we were exposed to it.

After its roar, as if they were just waiting for this command, all mermen started running towards the city. The mermen boss didn't move though. It stayed in its position for some time before turning its head in our direction.

"It looks like we don't have to go through the trouble of attracting it," Galpin said to us when he saw the monster. Everyone in our group gulped when they met its gaze. I gulped for a different reason though. It was ugly. Hellishly ugly. The mermen boss roared again, not loudly as before, but upon hearing its small roar, the mermen in the surroundings started running in our direction. They were about 20 of them.

The boss mermen still didn't move but observed us closely. None of us moved either, we had to let them come in range for the mages to attack. But before that, I started gathering mana on my palm and started chanting a spell. The others were about to stop me when Galpin signaled them to stop.

I started compressing 20 fireballs on my plan until they were the size of a marble. This compressed version of the fireball was not an individual skill since the system didn't recognize it so. This compressed version only increased the penetrating ability, nothing else. I didn't have to chant, but I had to pretend in front of them.

When I finished compressing them, I turned and asked the viscount, "Are their cores valuable?" He seemed to have gotten my point. He nodded and said, "Normally they are but in this case, it's more necessary to stop them. Since we don't have to drag their bodies out of the dungeon, their worth is almost the same."

In normal cases, you can't bring a body of a monster out of the dungeon, and storage rings are not big enough to allow for many to be stored. So normally, only their cores are harvested. But right now, we have a whole body to ourselves. We can harvest many parts. I feel sorry for the people who would have to dismember them though.

I nodded and turned my attention back to the mermen. The mermen were close enough for mages to attack by now. I released the flame marbles in my hand and directly penetrated the cores inside their abdomen. I didn't have to pinpoint their location; it was the only place in their bodies that was showing mana signals.

All the mermen fell at once and everyone stared at me in astonishment. Even the viscount was surprised. Many messages from the system informed me of the usual things like how I gained ingredients from their bodies in my inventory and about gold, and how I cannot raise my level anymore because of the penalty.

"Well done boy. Now stand back, we will deal with the boss monster. Provide support when you can." The viscount ordered me, and I simply nodded in return. It wouldn't hurt to listen to someone who was about to die soon. The boss mermen seeing its subordinates dead became enraged and started running in our direction. From our side, except for the archer and me, everyone else started running to confront it and took their respective positions.
