Chapter 78

Carter was lying bleeding on the deck. Fog all around prevented me from seeing what else was around.

My eyes were fixed on his form. He was motionless, and his eyes were closed. Was he dead or alive? I didn't know.

The fog didn't let me see if his chest was rising and falling, which would be a sign that he was breathing, so he was alive.

I started running towards him, screaming his name. But no matter how hard I ran, I couldn't catch up with him. I tried harder, but Carter was always the same distance away from me.

I screamed his name louder, but he didn't respond. Tears started rolling down my cheeks.

I dropped to my knees and tried to crawl to him. Maybe that would help, but nothing. The distance between us always remained the same. He was so close to me and unreachable at the same time.

I stretched out my hands to try to reach him but to no avail.
