"Oh, Emmelyn, I can't believe I'm going to live in a mansion with a hot prince!" Emma said to me. She'd gotten over the fiasco we had a couple of days ago. We got mom to read us the full letter and it turned out they'd be coming to retrieve one of us today.
"Emy, he isn't a prince. He's just going to take over all the properties and business his family has when it's his turn." I told Emma.
"Em, that doesn't matter. What does matter is that I'll be treated like a princess!" Emy gushed.
"He just needs a wife who can do amazing Tik Tok's, and who can do Tik Tok's better than me- other than you?'' Emy attempted to do that silly dolphin dance.
I went back to my room, it was a Tuesday night and I had homework to do. I didn't have time to watch Emy gush and daydream about someone she's only seen through a screen and arch her back in an unnatural way, though I won't say I've never done it.
I heard a knock on my door and I told them to come in. My mom came in and sat down.
She had dark brown hair and dark brown eyes and was on the darker side, just like Emy and El, while I had dark brown roots mixed in with sandy brown hair and I had brighter brown eyes. Not exactly hazel, but not dark brown, and I had more of a caramel complexion.
"Em, I've given this lots of thought, and I'm going to be sending you to live with the Manchesters." She said in a voice meaning this wasn't up for negotiation.
"Why not Emy? She was so excited to receive the letter." I said in a sarcastic tone. Honestly, I was tired of trying to lower her expectations for this, just send her for a day and she'd want to come crying back home to us.
"You're older and more mature. I know if something went wrong, you'd be able to handle it. I'm not so sure about Emy, though. I know she'll be sad, but she'll be happy for you." Mother said, running her fingers through my now-dry and crunched puff.
"As if, a couple of days ago when I even mentioned you sending me, she looked at me with eyes so murderous I thought I died for a split second," I said and she sighed, sitting down on the bed next to me.
"Listen, she knows they're supposed to be leaving today, so she'll be busy packing because she loves to procrastinate. You pack everything you'll need and we'll leave out the back. We'll make it quick and by the time you're long gone, she'll have only started to figure it out." Mom said, pulling an old, dusty suitcase from under her bed.
"What? I was young and could travel once too." She smiled at me. I guess I was looking at her weirdly, but maybe not. Adults are dramatic too sometimes.
"I'll go check if Emy's started packing yet, you go ahead and start." Mom opened the suitcase and left me to do my own thing.
"Alright…" I mumbled, pulling my favorite clothes out of a dresser. I also packed up things like Eco gel, my hairbrush, my comb, some pads, glasses cleaner and wipe. Just a few necessities.
I puffed, happy to be finished after an hour of packing, and pulled out my old, batted up phone, and immediately started to text my friends.
[Hey I won't be goin to school no more bc my mom is giving me to a rich family or sum] I texted them to let them know my situation.
[omg, girl, I'm so jealous. I wanna go to a rich persons house and eat all they food :(] One of my friends replied to the group chat.
[No fair! I've been trying to get my family to send me to rich people for forever!] Another one of my friends replied, making me giggle.
[You've gotta invite us over, k? What's the deal anyway?] A different friend asked me.
[I'm going to be the wife of the Manchesters son, I think?] I replied.
[King Manchester? No way! He's so cute!] The first girl replied.
[Yea, and have you seen his house?] The second girl replied.
[Oh, and don't get me started on all the Gucci and Lewi] The third girl said.
[I'll be sure to send my besties some ;)] I replied and put away my phone.
Was I even dressed to go to the Manchester Manor anyway? I was in a baggy tie-dye crop top and a pair of jeans.
Nope, not all at. I thought to myself, but before I could change, mom came through the door.
"Come on, Em, they're here. We've got to get you gone." Mom picked up my suitcase and rolled it as silently as she could across the hall into the kitchen and out the backdoor. We walked around to the front and lo and behold, in all its glory, a limo.
"Wow, Em. If I sold all of us, including me, I probably wouldn't even be able to buy a limo." Mom chuckled, rolling my suitcase up to the car.
A man got out of the driver's seat and opened the door for me and let me in the car.
"You sit here, we've got to make sure this is your legal guardian." The man told me and I just nodded.
After a few minutes, I felt the engine come to life and us driving off to this 'Manchester Manor'.
I looked around the limo. There were alcohol, snacks, candy, tea, and juice boxes. I took a picture to show my girlfriends, and grabbed a king-sized Hershey's bar, opened it, and downed it within minutes. My family loved chocolate, and if we didn't have any food, there would still be chocolate. Of course, Emy and El's stomachs are a little sensitive, so they'd get a stomach ache after eating so much chocolate, but I'd just get full.
I nibbled on chocolate and ate at least 10 more bars until we arrived at the Manchester Manor. It looked like something out of the movies.
The guy who let me in opened the door and held his hand out for me to take, I took it and he helped me out of the car, letting me go once I was on the ground.
'Wow,' I mouthed. The man walked me into the manor and told me that a maid by the name of Jessie would take me to greet the Manchesters.
"Hello Miss, I am Jessie." A maid rounded the corner and saw me.
"Hi, I'm Emmelyn," I said, my nerves kicking in from being in such a large place.
"Follow me, Miss Emmelyn. The Manchesters will be happy to finally meet you." The maid said.
We walked around the house and I couldn't stop comparing everything I saw with my favorite book series, The Selection. I felt like I was living the selection except I was the only contestant… or at least I thought I was. They would probably still send me home if they didn't like me or I didn't qualify for something I needed to qualify for.
It's not as if they'd have a hard time finding a better, prettier, more fit wife for him anyway.
"In there, Miss Emmelyn." Jessie pointed to a double door that was closed.
"Call me Em, please," I said, walking into the room. I was met with 3 pairs of eyes.
One dark brown pair and two hazel pairs. Everyone was a caramel color and I couldn't have been happier. Being a lighter skin tone is hard when you're surrounded by chocolate bars.
I saw the woman scribble something down. Is she judging the way I'm walking? That's unfair.
"Please, sit here," she gestured to a seat not so far away from her own "I'm Miria." She said a sweet smile on her face.
"This is my husband, John, and my son, King." I looked over to the males in the room. John had a nice haircut and a trimmed mustache. He looked good. King had a high afro on his head and he looked more into what was happening on his phone than what was happening in the room.
"So, we've received some information about you. We know your name is Emmelyn but is that what you like to be called?" Miria asked me, holding up the clipboard.
"I like Em," I replied.
"As of now, your room will be in the more secluded part of the mansion. You'll be a few halls away from us, but don't take it personally. This house is very old but we've tried to make it as modern as possible. Don't be afraid to ask Jessie, the person who will be attending to you, for help." She said, placing the clipboard in her lap.
"Yes ma'am," I replied.
"Great! It might be a little hard to adjust to living here, so we want to make it as comfortable as possible. You'll start going to school with King tomorrow." Miria said and I felt a little uncomfortable. It's always heart-pounding the night before you go to a new school or even a new year at the same school. First days are scary regardless.
"Let's get to know each other more."
Fun fact: I became a breeding cow for writing when I started this book (last week today), and I've already written up to 20 chapters :)
Anybody up for chapters twice a week? I'm sure I could afford that XD I don't plan on this book having more than a hundred chapters, so I hope you can drink some strong child tea.
