Seeing my neighbor at nine in the morning was better than caffeine. Though he still looked sad and weary, he smiled a little when he saw me in the parking lot.

“Hello,” he said shyly once he stopped at the passenger side of my truck.

“Morning,” I greeted him and opened the driver’s side door. “Hop in,” I said, and when his seatbelt was fastened, I started the engine and backed out of my spot before heading into the busy street.

“Have you eaten as of yet?” I asked as I turned left on Main.

“Yeah,” he rumbled next to me, and when I took a quick peek at him, he was staring out the window. He’d left his hair down, something I’d never seen him do, and it was as gorgeous and thick as I’d thought it would be.

“I haven’t, but I’ll probably grab an egg biscuit or something.” I honked my horn at someone going ten miles below the speed limit before overtaking them. “Did you sleep okay?”
