Chapter Five: Burning Bridges and Broken Hearts

Mila could see him reaching for the shifter, his eyes darting to the only possible way out—the entrance. This was her moment, and it had to be now. With determination coursing through her veins, she flung open the car door and leaped out, shouting after him as he attempted to reverse.

"Please, stop avoiding me! Can't we talk for one minute?" she cried at the top of her lungs. The car continued to retreat, and Liam swung the wheel to turn himself around. The top of the convertible was down, giving Mila a clear view of his face. He could hear her, but he was ignoring her, refusing to engage.

"Liam Benjamin, be a man and come talk to me!" she screeched, her frustration boiling over.

A look of disgust twisted his features, and he slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a halt. His lips moved, spewing venomous curses she was glad she couldn't hear. Without hesitation, Liam got out of the car, his body tense with anger, and he pointed an accusatory finger at her. "We've got nothing to talk about! You messed up big time, Mila Wright. I'm done listening to your excuses. I won't hear any more of your lies. I'm through with all of it!" he snarled, his voice vibrating with fury.

His words shook Mila, leaving her both nervous and inflamed. Liam had always been passionate, but seeing his ire directed at her felt surreal. They had argued before, but this felt like a critical crossroads. Mila took a deep breath, feeling the oxygen rush through her lungs, invigorating her entire being. She felt confident because if there was one thing she excelled at, it was holding her ground.

"Don't you dare give me that! I've treated you like a god, and now, the moment I make one tiny slip-up, you're ready to bury me? I don't even know what the problem is. It's not fair, and you know it. So how about you grow a pair of balls, accept that we all make mistakes, move on, and put this behind us?"

Incensed, Liam placed his hands on his face, but even in his anger, he remained strikingly attractive, like something out of a glossy magazine ad. He wore a pair of jeans and a polo shirt that fit him perfectly, further adding to his allure.

"A tiny slip-up? You're such a bitch," he snapped, his words stinging with resentment.

"You know better than to call me that, you fucking asshole!" she shot back, her fiery spirit refusing to back down.

"You're flatter than a pancake!" He yelled.

"And If your dick were a month, it'd be February! Shorter than the rest and over before you know it!" she blurted out, momentarily losing her composure.

Realizing the slip, she quickly tried to backtrack. "No, no, I didn't mean that. It's average. Really …" She brought her hand to her chin, attempting to regain her cool, but her face flushed with embarrassment.

"Look at what you just did. That's what I'm talking about!" Liam said, his anger beginning to wane, replaced by a more thoughtful tone. "I don't think you're right for me, Mila. Maybe you never were. So why don't we just accept that and part ways?"

Mila winced, the pain of his words cutting deep. To him, breaking up seemed like a done deal, leaving her feeling like she was falling into an abyss. Desperately, she searched for something, anything, to bring him back from the precipice.

"But that's not true. We belong together. I love you, Liam. Remember all the crazy antics we used to pull together, like planting condoms in toy stores or stealing tokens from kids at the arcade? It's those memories that make me care about you so much."

However, Liam shook his head, blocking out her arguments as if they were mere distractions. "It wasn't all like that. You're leaving out a lot. I guess you never realized how embarrassing it was for you to talk to your friends about me. I never get a chance to do my homework because you're always distracting me. If you cared about me so much, how come you do everything you can to have such a negative impact on my life?" he questioned.

Mila opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out. Liam's words hit her like a punch to the gut, leaving her speechless.

"That's why I need to find a good girl, one who will actually try to help me with things. There's got to be someone out there who's innocent, maybe a bit naïve, but always has the best of intentions. You're jaded and cynical, and it makes me sad to think some of that's rubbed off on me. It's time for a fresh start with someone who doesn't know about all the bad parts of the world," he mused, the sadness evident in his eyes.

Mila took a step closer, meeting his gaze, and gently reached for his arm. For a moment, their connection felt palpable, like she was speaking to his soul. "Liam, the kind of girl you're looking for doesn't exist. We all want some kind of perfect angel, but down here on the ground, we have to make choices and deal with reality. Every girl does something you won't like, whether it's shooting heroin before math class, cheating on taxes, or not shaving her armpits. So really, there's nothing wrong with me at all. We can be happy together again just as soon as you realize that," she pleaded, hoping to finally convince him to come back to her.

But instead of softening, Liam flinched away from her, his face twisted with fury. She didn't know what she had said to provoke such a reaction, but she knew it wasn't what she intended. His sudden glare held icy malice, and she knew there was only one card left for him to play.
