The Lake

"Oh, hey you'll never guess what happened today at P.E." Rose called to me as we sped past the trees.

"What, did Karra NOT give you the evil eye today?" I yelled back. It wasn't very windy out but our speed made it hard to hear each other.

"No!" I noticed her smile on her face. "John Moore smiled and winked at me after we came out of the locker room."

Out destination was up ahead.

"You're kidding!" I exclaimed.

"No, I'm not." Rose flashed me a grin.

"Well I guess it's my turn to say something interesting. Ryan decided to stand up for me against Karra."

Roses' smile faded as we came to a stop and I soon realized why.

Right there in front of where we hid the hole to where the entrance of the ruins we discovered a few months back were two identical bikes both green with shiny tires.

"OMG. Has someone found out site!" I whispered to Rose. I didn't want anyone to find out about the ruins until me and Rose were finished looking. "Did you tell anyone about this?" I asked her.

"No! Of course not… besides they haven't found the entrance."

I was shocked! But the people who were here hadn't seemed to have found the entrance.

"I think we should leave." Rose says quietly. I nod. We back out slowly.

SNAP!

"What was that?" Rose said whispering loudly enough for anyone within 20 paces of her would hear.

"Probably just some wildlife." I reply.

She raised her eyebrows at me as if asking 'here' because that didn't sound like any animal they're smart enough not to step on anything that'll give their presence away (years of evolution does that to animals and plants)

"I think the people who left their bikes are waiting for us to go into the ruin."I say.

"I think you're right," Rose replies. "Why else would they be here?"

From the peripheral vision I see a shadowy figure and I whirl around but see nothing.

"Anything wrong?" Rose asked.

"Yeah, I thought I saw –" I see another figure and this time I see it before it can get out of my line of sight. "Ha, caught you." I yell and the figure stops and turns around and to my surprise –

"What they!" Rose exclaims, interrupting my last thought. It was Ryan and John stepping out from behind a thick oak tree.

"Why are you guys here – how did you ever find this place?" I demanded.

"Because we've been following you guys for a week." John answered.

It was kind of creepy, knowing people follow you, but THIS was kind of stalkerish. And they just kept staring at us. John was looking at Rose and Ryan was looking at me. I started back into his emerald eyes when I said, "Why? What's with the sudden interests?" I exhale not realizing I was holding my breath and waited for their answer.

"Don't worry, it's not a sudden interest." Ryan says.

"You guys just weren't paying attention." John cuts in.

"Well we've had to ignore just about all the guys in the school. We may not be popular, but having that many guys mooning after us we might as well have been celebrities or models." Rose says coolly. "But still doesn't answer Grace's question."

John walks up to us with Ryan right behind. "We just wanted to talk."

"Talk away." I say, it almost sounded sarcastic.

"We can't if you keep interrupting and asking questions." John says.

"Questions we have a right to ask." Rose responds.

"Again with the interrupting!" Ryan says as he looks at me. "But we were hoping individually." He says.

"Why?" I ask suspiciously.

"It is a private matter for both of us." John says and I swear he was blushing! Why would he do that? He must have talked to a lot of girls before.

Ryan makes a motion for me to follow him and John does the same to Rose. I look at rose and she shrugs her shoulders and follows John.

"Are you coming?" Ryan asks.

"Fine." I reply and follow him out the clearing into the forest. "Alright, let's talk." He lets out a deep breath like he was nervous or something.

"Ok, you can do this." He mumbles to himself. He then turns. "Nice outfit." He says.

"Uh…. Thanks. But seriously what do you want to talk about?" I questioned.

"I… uh. Um- well…"

"Have you ever talked to a girl before?" I giggled.

"Of course I have!" he snaps defensively. "Just not you."

"Why am I any different?"

"It's just you and Rose are somewhat reclusive and I don't exactly know what to say." He finishes. "I guess I'll just say it then." He mumbles more to himself then me.

"What?"

"Uh…" he replies, then he blurts out, "Will you go out with… with me?"
