Give Chase

As their eyes locked, Mark felt a tingle in his head and instantly knew that he was no match for the enemy. He switched gears and turned the truck around sharply.

"It's seen us..." David whispered.

The half-demon raised its right hand and pointed at the truck. The mindless demons that were close by all flew in the direction of the truck like crazed ants.

"Sh*t…" David cocked his shotgun and came out of the window of the truck.

Bang! He shot a demon that was getting close to the truck and cocked his gun and repeated the process.

"They aren't stopping, we gotta get outta here. Step on the gas!"

Mark switched gears once again and accelerated. It was hard for them to speed away due to the other vehicles that served as obstacles.

Bang! Mark glanced at David and confirmed he was busy fighting off the demons, his eyes turned completely black and veins popped out on his neck then he whispered, "Stop chasing us."

David was out of bullets and sat back in the truck. He turned back to only see the mindless demons stopping in their tracks.

...Why did they end the pursuit all of a sudden? He sat straight and noticed Mark was panting heavily.

Mark looked at the side mirror and saw as the demons retreated then said, "They're not chasing anymore. Thank God. I think we got lucky."

"...Yeah…"

After an hour and a few minutes of casual chat, they had arrived at 204th Street, Bayside.

Bayside was in Queens borough. It was bounded by Whitestone to the northwest, the Long Island Sound and Little Neck Bay to the northeast, Douglaston to the east, Bellerose to the south, and Fresh Meadows to the west.

The houses were duplex and had a front lawn with most of them having stairs leading up to the porch.

The mindless demons walked about the streets, ransacked vehicles, climbed buildings and sat on roofs.

Mark drove and stopped in front of the house of the address Inspector Jones gave him.

David looked around and asked, "Is this where the refugees are?"

"I don't know, actually. I was just given this house address and was told they're refugees here." Mark turned off the truck's engine.

"You got this info from the head of your precinct, right?" David got down from the truck before getting his axe and shotgun.

"Yeah. We're lucky radio frequencies still work. I wonder what happened to all smartphones."

He took out a flip phone from his pocket, "It's not only smartphones."

Mark was too far away to be able to see its contents and didn't bother about it. He got down from the vehicle and went to the door of the house.

Knock-Knock-Knock…

"Is there anybody in there?" He tried looking in through the window but it was completely shut and the blinders were down.

He knocked thrice again, "Urgh… What were their names again? John! Andrew! Are you guys in there? Don't worry, I'm Officer Jordan. I work under your mom…"

He tried to open the door but it only budged.

"She's really worried about you guys."

David observed his surroundings. He noticed, instead of attacking, the demons in the area were avoiding them.

Knock-Knock-Knock…

"Since you don't wanna answer, I'm coming in…" Mark pulled out his Glock 19 pistol and shot the door handle. He wanted to ram into the door but later realized that he might completely break the door.

The door creaked open and he lightly stepped in with his gun in front, while David leisurely walked in.

"I'll check the living room, you check upstairs." David said.

Mark took baby steps up the stairs and checked the rooms but didn't find anyone.

"I've found 'em!" David spoke loudly, prompting Mark to rush down the stairs.

He traced where David's voice came from and arrived at the kitchen.

"They're hiding in the cabinet under the sink." David Dolan stood in the middle of the kitchen and the door of the cupboard under the sink was open.

"I still can't wrap my head around how they could all fit inside…" He jokingly added.

A girl about Stephanie's age but looked a bit older and two small boys that weren't older than twelve years old were hiding in the cabinet.

"Stay back!" She pointed a knife forward and Mark walked into the kitchen.

They were fear-stricken.

Mark put his gun back into his inside waistband holster and slowly walked closer, "Calm down, ok? I was sent here to protect you kids…"

"Stay back! I swear I'm gonna stab you with this knife if you take one more step!" The teenage girl screamed.

...This must be the girl she mentioned. Her sister's daughter… Mark decided he was close enough and bent down.

"I'm your mom's colleague," He searched himself and nervously added, "Heh, I-I think I forgot my badge in the truck. She's busy so she sent me here to get you guys."

"S-So you're not here to try to kill us?"

"What? No! I'm trying to help your aunt."

"Thank God." She dropped the knife and hesitantly came out of the cupboard along with her cousins.

"What's your name?" Mark asked the girl.

"Tanya."

"Ok, Tanya. You did well in protecting yourself and your cousins these past few days. My name's Mark. You two must be Andrew and John, right?" Mark smiled at them but didn't wait for an answer before he added, "Go get your stuff. We don't have time to waste."

David was fiddling around with the television in hopes to make it work but later found out that the power was out.

It took the kids about 10 minutes to completely pack their essentials as instructed by Mark.

"Good to go? Awesome. Just one more thing…" Mark proceeded to blindfold them.

They left the house and Mark placed their bags on the bed floor of the truck.

David helped the children into the back seat of the truck and took stride steps to the other side of the truck where the passenger seat was.

"Too bad. At this rate, I don't think we'll be able to get those refugees." Mark opened the door to the driver's seat.

"...Yeah---"

"Pssst! Psssssst! Psssst!"

David turned around to see where the sound came from and saw the young lad about 18-20 years old fervently calling for their attention discreetly by making silent noises.
