Months on,
Jamal drove me to work, not to my surprise anymore, it had now become one of his etiquette.
"Bye baby!" He dropped a soft on my lips "Call me up if you feel some type of way physically and in there!" He pointed at my belly
"Yes honey, I would!" I struggled to unbuckle the seat belt around. Right after I motioned him to open the car door, then he cupped my face into his palm, making me look into his eyes. He looked worried and concerned which I bet was normal
"Hey! I love you so much and I want you safe, safer than the moon!" He smiled
"I love you too Khaleef! As always!"
He pressed a button and there, I got out briskly. The security escorted me into the building, then Omar came forth with a smile.
"Morning Danni!" We snuggled
"Morning Omar! What do we have today?" I asked walking away then he followed from behind.
Catherina and Jacinthe came into the conference room Holding coffee cups. We were about to kick start a meeting with a few clients, including our dearest, Arch. Akin Harvey. Then I requested tea from my Secretary, Mona. The stare I got these days was exceptional. I couldn't help but ask Jacinthe and Catherina who were muttering about something under their breathe while Omar was out to remind Kabir about the meeting.
"Can y'all tell me what the chit chat is about!" I raised my brows looking at them
They stopped like mannequins looking for the right words to utter.
"Oh ma'am! Its about you....we think you're pregnant..." Catherina blurted out, immediately she covered her mouth with her palms. She knew she ran her mouth.
"Goddammit! We're sorry ma'am!" Jacinthe added
"The next time you'd talk about your boss would cost you your jobs, is that fair enough?" I asked authoritatively
They affirmed in unison, with remorse.
"Even if I was, you got a problem?"
"Absolutely not! If it is ma'am, we can't wait!" Jacinthe added in excitement
"Crazy! Can we head on? Open up the door....where's Omar and Kabir?" I asked supervising and delegating.
At about 7pm, Eric and Ada stopped by for dinner. I had to fix up a better and special delicacy. We sat to eat
"I expected to see Kayla, but I forgive you! Eric" Jamal teased, and we laughed to it
"I really can't wait for Danni's baby....she would look like pearls on heavens gate!" Ada fantasied. I could see the astonishment on her.
"To be honest, we've not discovered the gender just yet....." Jamal added
"That's great and weird though. Every parent is always eager to know the gender..." Eric added rightly
Correct! I wanted that to be a surprise for Jamal, I couldn't let it out for the pressure reasons they had on us. My husband would come first, that's a principle, well most times.
"Well, I'd prefer my wife decides on that. But for now, I love being overwhelmed by the charms...." Jamal made a very good point but we laughed again
"Mother would be here any moment. She promised visiting, but the governor is a little bit busy....." Ada explained
She tried to make his tasks sound lighter but its actually not.
Madam Carol and the governor visited once ever since, I felt bad, but what else? At least, they squeezed out time for me. I didn't react to it anyways.
"I'd always wait....." I turned to Eric "So, how is it, working with the governor? Your political interest seems upheaval, better than I expected!" I asked
He wiped his mouth, sipped on the juice
"Trust me Danni, I don't settle for less. Its been awesome, no regrets. The governor insisted that I run for deputy..." He answered
"He has a deputy, right?" Jamal pointed out
"....He had his reasons, like I said, he insisted!" Eric justified
We only affirmed to it because Jamal and I lived a very private life, and we wouldn't want to question his decisions even if Eric's opinion was not enough. We respected it. I was really stunned by Jamal, his father was indeed famous but Jamal had a perfect relationship with people, influential yet silently. He really maintained his decisions.
We finished eating after a long talk.
"Thanks a lot for coming, I'm happy y'all did!" I said to them
"We'd do more, honey." Eric replied
We all hugged in turns
"Soon enough I'd be taking Kayla for the weekends, I really hope grandma approves of it" I added funnily
They bursted into laughter as Sam, their chauffeur performed his duty ass they drove off. Jamal helped me with the dishes yet insisted I get some house helps around.
As always, I declined politely.
We laid in the bedroom seeing a movie. I felt too hot all of a sudden, I wore a very light red robe, Jamal appreciated it when I did that, the robes. While he was in a white robe and black pants. I lied next to him, cuddled in his arms while we watched.
"Ada was right though. We didn't confirm the gender....shouldn't we?"
"Why are you even worried about it?" I asked with a smile
"To know how I could restructure my gifts? Danni don't play with me! We should!" He insisted
"Babe! Its hot in here!" I complained compelling my fingers to flap for air "Could you get the AC turned on?" I requested
I could just turn it on with the controller but i wanted him to do it, for the sweet man he was.
"Like I could get you turned on?" Jamal teased again, this man is could be so unholy right?
He turned it on then crawled towards me on the bed. I cupped his face then pressed a soft kiss on his lips then I halted
"No Danni. That's cheating....." He joked
"What if I told you that....." I halted again
"...That what? No excuses though!" He pointed out
"...we are having a baby...." I teased
He grinned and replied
"He's in here!" He pressed a kiss on my little bump.
"A boy!" I blurted out finally
He stopped, looking at me intently with a frozen smile fixated on his face.
"Nah! Are you kidding me? A man like me?" Jamal exploded in excitement
"You keep making me happy, babe! From a father to a fathers' son..." His eyes welled up in joy, he had long waited for a son, I guess luck was on our side. All we thought about instantly was getting down to the night business and there! We collided in an honest lust.
I was now close to having my son in my arms. It sounded new to me but I remembered my mom once felt this way, and Ada, not far from home. From the nauseousness to the giddy feeling, the heaviness, I concluded he must be a big guy. Jamal would always remind me about my appointments with the doctor, when it came to me and our son, he wasn't too busy to attend to us. As I drew closer to labor, it felt scary and uneasy. All I wanted was to bring forth this boy that wouldn't let Jamal and I sleep peacefully. The contractions were enormous, at a point I felt it was time but hell no! The water hasn't broken yet and now I had few more days to countdown. Jamal was even scarier, every time he looked at me, he felt emotional. All he would say is 'I wish there was a better way to maneuver nature, but there isn't!'. It was comforting. Tommie and Ana had twins and weren't thinking of adding another but anticipated ours, In my terms, everyone I knew, anticipated our big guy including Lola.
At the time our son was born, we got gifts from far and near, local and foreign, designers clothes and shoes. Everyone participated. Jimmy and his family brought countless gifts, his wife would assist in bathing and tiding up. Then I realized how extremely good it was to support whoever you could. Lola bought a while of designer wears and a cradle, she did the exceptional. Everything happened so fast and now, looking into my sons eyes, I could see the Khaleefa's and pinch of Hunter, how could I forget. At a point, Jamal suggested we name our son after Hunter but I politely declined, it wasn't appropriate for me and us. Let bygones be bygones. It would make no difference, hunter would be in our hearts. To me, personally, I felt it was crazy giving my son another man's name, Jamal is very alive so I demanded he gives out a name from his heart, a name he had always wanted for our child (boy). Jamal affirmed Jordan while I affirmed Kareem. And there, it stood perfectly.
