Monument

The Bergen- Belsen camp area was abandoned after the burning of the buildings and the closure of the nearby IDP camp in the summer of 1950. Few traces remained. However, as early as May 1945, the British had erected large billboards at the old camp. Former prisoners began to establish monuments. The displaced Jews erected a wooden one in September 1945, followed by a stone one, for the first anniversary of the camp's liberation in 1946. On November 2, 1945, a large wooden cross was put up

dedicated to the murdered Polish prisoners. Also at the end of 1945 the Soviets built a monument at the entrance to the prisoner of war cemetery. This was followed by a memorial to the Italian prisoners in 1950, but it was removed when the bodies were buried in the Hamburg cemetery.
