Chapter 117

The area where the wealthy lived was… I kind of expected more. The houses were simply bigger than the normal house in town. Well, way bigger. But they had nothing that could make me gawk and look around in admiration.

That was a feeling coming from my forgotten memory. Ah, it really was a curse to be amnesiac. Though, it was obvious my past identity was no joke. What with all the knowledge and impressions I had had so far.

It was easy to find the Commissioner's house. There was a big board with the inscription 'COMMISSIONER' on it. It was safe to say that in many positions in Basin Town the person changed after a period of time.

Unless the person asked to remain on the post. In that case, the next person had to sigh relieved because no one would want to post in such a remote area.

That was something I learned from Ethan, who knew more on how things worked in town.

"May I help you, Ma'am?" The guard posted by the entrance gate asked as soon as he saw me approach the house.

"Could you please tell the young lady of the house that Mrs. Edris has come looking for her?" I gently requested. The guards shared a look, but one still went in to relay my message. The other continued guardian, meaning, he just stood there looking ahead.

After some time, in which I thought the guy had just gone to walk around to pretend he had asked, he returned with the attendant that accompanied the Commissioner and Marleene that day at our house.

"Mrs. Edris. Good day." The attendant respectfully greeted me. "The young lady is unavailable for a few days. Is it about the matter she ordered?" She inquired.

'Unavailable for a few days' was a polite way to say Marleene was on her bleeding days. Thank you, sudden thought coming from somewhere in my mind. "Yes. When she is available, would you tell her to visit me at Textiles Attile? In the morning, if she would be so kind."

"Of course. Thank you for letting us know." The attendant bowed.

"No problem. See you, then." I smiled and waved goodbye.

With no Marleene to measure, then I had no way to continue working on the dress. I could make the cape, but I also wanted for the teen to be there to confirm the length. So, with nothing to do that morning, I headed to the shop where I saw some nice furniture.

The place reminded me a bit of that shop Ethan used to work at because I could distantly hear the sounds of hammering and sanding. However, the place was bigger and even had finished products on display.

"Welcome! How may I help you?" The man attending the place had a pair of inappropriate eyes, but I let it slide since the furniture the shop sold was very pretty.

"I am looking for bedroom sets." I tonelessly said.

"Sure, sweetie! You can actually arm your own sets with the bed, the dresser, the chest, tables and the mirror." Despite his flirty attitude, he was business-oriented, so I did not mind his empty monikers.

The shop had two types of bed on display, or it was better to say the bed bases. The first was the usual box-like base with four legs, and the other was a box-like base without legs. The second one actually had a couple of drawers in it.

"How much is this one?" I asked, pointing at the second base. It was rather simple, but I like the practicality of the drawers.

"That's 15 coins. All our furniture is made with Maple wood and stained with color. It is also guaranteed to last you quite a few years." The man explained, knocking on the base that did not sound hollowed at all. I did wonder if it was too heavy to carry.

So, I asked. "By any chance, do you send the furniture to the house?"

He paused. "People normally rent oxen carts to carry the furniture." He said, as if it was obvious.

Oh. "Oh. Right. Well, you could invest on that. Offer that service and earn a few more coins." I offhandedly commented. "Anyway, I want this one. I like this burgundy color, let us see if… aha! This chest looks nice."

There was a big burgundy chest beside a beige one. I opened it and the smell of wood assaulted my nose. The inside had nothing impressive, just the space of the box, but the outside was beautifully carved.

"You've good eyes, gorgeous!" The man complimented. "This is the best work of our carver. It costs the same as the bed you chose, but it not only has its practical function, it also decorates the bedroom." He was not lying. It would really make any bedroom look nicer.

However, 15 coins…

Ethan had given me his whole salary and the tips he had earned the past month, and it barely surpassed the 30 coins. 30 coins and 2 dimes to be exact. With just two pieces of furniture, I already spent all the money he gave me.

On a whim, I also carried 10 coins. With that money, I had to buy the drawer. But I was not sure if they had cheap ones. They all looked above 10 coins.

"I need a drawer, too, but I have only 10 coins left..." It was better to be sincere and let him give advice.

"Lemme see..." He looked around. "Well, there's this..." He placed his hand on a table.

A table with two drawers. The carving was not as elaborate as the chest, just some simple ridges around the edges. The legs went from thick to thin, starting from the upper part. It was quite a singular table.

"Someone ordered this, but never showed up. It was quite easy to make, but the design's not quite what people like..." He explained with a wry smile. "It's 8 coins."

"I want it!" I could buy a drawer and another table later on. I saw quite a big table on display there, so I knew where to get them. Or I could also order one to my liking. Though, I was quite interested in following the design of the table with the drawers for my other table.

Either way, that was for the future.

"Sure. Anything else?" He asked.

"That would be it. I have no more money on me for the time being." I shook my head.

"Alright. That'd be 38 coins, beauty." He moved to the counter. I took out the money and placed it on it. "Would you like me to rent a cart for you, sweetie? I know someone who's very honest and doesn't charge much."

"Oh, no that is fine. My Husband will come in a moment. He can rent it." I smiled at him. With how happy I was with my purchases; I could not care less about his flirty words.

"Lucky guy." He rested his elbows on the counter and grinned, giving me a once over.

The door opened an in came the object of our conversation. Lucas was the one assigned to accompany me to buy the furniture. However, we separated on the town's entrance. He went to the market to sell game to Monthe while I headed to the Commissioner's house.

Then, I told him to meet me at that furniture shop. I had no idea what the name was, so I could only describe the shop's front and what was around. It seemed I was not clear enough because he took his time to find it.

I did take a while to walk to the Commissioner's house with my slow steps.

"You done?" He asked, looking at me.

I nodded. "Let me show you!" I excitedly took his hand and went around the shop showing him the furniture I picked.

"Just that?" He frowned.

"I have the bad habit of choosing the expensive stuff, so I can only afford these." I lamented. He threw his arm around my shoulders and pulled me towards him.

"I have money here." He lowly said in a very sensual voice.

To ignore the itch his voice sparked in me, I played with the strings of his shirt. I had to make new ones for all. Another pair of pants, too. "It is fine. You have to buy things at Corey and rent the oxen cart for the furniture. We can always come another day." I looked up at him.

He stared for a few seconds before nodding. "If you say so."

I smiled at him and quickly leaned up to peck him on the lips. "I love you!" I chirped.

"Hm." He hummed, glancing at the side. That reminded me that we were not alone! Oh my!

I peeked at the attendant who was trying to look at anything but us. "Lucas here will carry the furniture. You can arrange everything with him." I told the attendant, who awkwardly nodded. "I have to go. Mrs. Attile is supposed to arrive today." I, then, told Lucas.

"Be careful." He removed his arm from my shoulders but did not step away. He leaned down and whispered in my ear. "I love you, too." I had no time to react before he planted a kiss on my temple and started addressing the attendant.

Was he too shy to express his love to me before others?

However, the way he did it was even more intimate and tempting!

How could he do that and leave me hanging?!
