It wasn't the entire device that shone. The device got lines that didn't appear before which shone. I noticed that the light was growing from the bottom all the way up, and all the lines were converging at that arched pipe.
When all the lines shone, the pipe also shone with the same light. It turned from a cold looking pipe into a wisp of flame, and then a bright light came out from its tip, travelling for a mile before ending up to form a grand screen in the sky.
