Chapter 177: Enemy Attack! Fear! Despair! And Chen Ye's Flame of Hope
The team assembled.
Everyone set off immediately, without any delay. In reality, the frontline situation was urgent, and they couldn't afford to delay.
However...
When everyone reached outside the campus and saw the scene in front of them, there was a moment of silence. The roads outside were completely blocked by cars! Clearly, the citizens had also received the news and were evacuating in a hurry.
The problem was that as a bustling metropolis, the roads in the city had not been well-planned. Even during regular rush hours, traffic was often congested. Now, with the entire city trying to escape, the roads were utterly gridlocked. Even though many traffic police officers were trying to direct traffic, it was to no avail.
Everyone knew that the monsters were about to break through the defenses. At this moment, a delay of even a second could mean the difference between life and death—not just for themselves, but for their entire families.
In such a situation, who would still listen to the traffic police? The roads were filled with shouting, arguing, and crying… a cacophony of chaotic sounds.
Chen Ye's gaze swept over the scene, taking in the sight of many elderly people, women, and children. Their faces were filled with fear, reminding him of his past.
On Earth, he had been just an ordinary person. If he had encountered such a disaster, he would have been as helpless as these people, at the mercy of fate.
"Captain Zheng, how do we get through now?" Old Liu asked.
Captain Zheng consulted his earpiece briefly before replying, "The roads are completely blocked. I'm afraid we'll have to walk through the two main exit roads first. Our vehicles are waiting in the third district."
Everyone nodded in agreement and began moving.
As Chen Ye walked, he started distributing the 190 potential points he had earned from Secret Realm No. 5. They were about to fight monsters, so any increase in strength would help!
Initially, Chen Ye had planned to allocate all 190 points to his mental attribute. But…
He feared that the mysterious observers, due to their obsessive tendencies, might stop watching this world. So, he adjusted his allocation, placing 18 points into physique, strength, and agility.
After all, from now on, every time he trained his attributes, they would increase in units of 10. Having stray digits left over just didn't look right…
Thus.
Chen Ye's attribute panel now looked like this:
Name: Chen Ye
Physique: 2710
Spirit: 1026
Strength: 2710
Agility: 2710
Talent: Saitama Physique
Potential Points: 0
After Chen Ye's spirit attribute surpassed 1000, he noticed that something had changed. The world around him became clearer. Additionally, there seemed to be a vague, indescribable sense of spiritual awareness…
For example, right now, Chen Ye could sense numerous gazes upon him. Those gazes came from the surrounding crowd.
After all, their group attracted attention—not only because there were soldiers in military uniforms, but also because several people were wearing exoskeleton armor. The traffic police, seeing this, immediately realized they were heading to the frontlines, cleared the way for them, and even saluted!
Many onlookers also spontaneously saluted, watching them as they headed toward the frontline.
In Chen Ye's heightened perception, he could even count how many eyes had looked at him. This sharp awareness was quite remarkable.
He instinctively moved closer to Tang Zichen and asked quietly, "Squad Leader, did you feel any changes after your spirit attribute broke a thousand?"
"Yes!" Tang Zichen replied, "I've become much more perceptive. I can't miss any slight movement around me. Even other people's gazes—I can feel them. I also seem to have a sense of danger."
"I tested it in the training room before. When I shot a bullet at myself, I could sense it coming. As long as the bullet wasn't too fast, I could dodge it easily."
Chen Ye was surprised. He hadn't expected her to have already tested this. What surprised him even more was that breaking a thousand in spirit attribute had such benefits.
It was a bit like Spider-Man's spider sense in the Marvel universe—being able to sense danger before it happens and react accordingly. Chen Ye had previously relied on his quick reflexes, which came from his agility attribute. However, anything outside his line of sight had been a blind spot. Now, it was as if he had no more blind spots.
In other words, from now on, anyone trying to sneak attack Chen Ye from behind would find it very difficult!
At this moment.
Tang Zichen seemed to have thought of something and gave Chen Ye a questioning look. She didn't speak, likely because there were many people around, and she didn't want anyone to overhear.
The two of them had developed a good rapport. With just a glance, Chen Ye knew what Tang Zichen was asking—whether his spirit attribute had also surpassed a thousand.
Chen Ye smiled and nodded in response.
Tang Zichen smiled back, just about to say something, when suddenly, her brow furrowed as she looked upward. Chen Ye did the same.
Both of them had excellent vision, with their spirit attributes now over a thousand. However, it was still the early hours of the morning, and with no moonlight, the sky was pitch black. Even with their sharp eyesight, they couldn't see very far.
Yet, Chen Ye could sense that something was up there in the sky.
"Something's not right!" Chen Ye shouted, his expression serious.
He wasn't worried for himself. He was worried about the civilians! At this moment, there were at least tens of thousands of people trapped on this road, unable to escape.
If something unexpected happened, the consequences would be catastrophic.
Everyone stopped in their tracks when they heard him.
"Chen Ye, what did you notice?" Old Liu asked.
"Ask the Squad Leader. Her spirit attribute is higher than mine."
Chen Ye responded humbly, even though the difference in their spirit attributes wasn't significant.
As the mysterious things in the sky drew closer to the ground, Tang Zichen was finally able to make out what they were.
Tang Zichen's face turned serious, and she immediately said, "Enemy attack, monsters… and a lot of them!"
The moment those words left her mouth, everyone's expressions changed drastically.
"Flying monsters?" Old Liu asked.
Tang Zichen nodded.
Everyone gasped in shock.
A soldier couldn't help but exclaim, "How is that possible? How can there be flying monsters from the ocean?"
Tang Zichen could see it clearly, and naturally, so could Chen Ye.
"They're monsters that look like flying fish!" Chen Ye shouted. "Don't dawdle! Get the civilians to take cover immediately!"
He could already see the swarms of flying fish-like monsters breaching the defensive lines and heading directly for the city.
Ordinary flying fish can't actually fly; they simply have long, wide pectoral fins that allow them to glide over the water's surface for short distances, much like a bird's wings.
But these monsters had clearly enhanced gliding abilities.
The others couldn't see as far as Chen Ye and Tang Zichen could, so they were still confused.
Just then...
Wooooo—
A sharp, piercing siren suddenly blared across the city.
It was the air raid alarm!
Even though human eyesight couldn't make out what was in the sky, these flying fish monsters couldn't escape radar detection. Clearly, the city had detected the incoming monsters and activated the air raid warning.
The sound of the alarm caused everyone's faces to change.
Even the civilians, including children, were gripped by fear.
For years, living under the constant threat of monsters, the public had grown all too familiar with the air raid sirens.
"Prepare for battle!!" Captain Zheng roared as he quickly approached the traffic police officers.
As he walked, he shouted, "Get your people to immediately guide the civilians to take cover!"
The traffic police, pale with fear, immediately obeyed, using their radios to instruct their colleagues to guide the evacuation.
Moments later, everyone could finally see what was attacking from the sky.
Just as Chen Ye had said, it was flying fish-like monsters.
However, unlike the regular rays from the ocean, these monsters had much stronger, broader wings, with a wingspan of at least three or four meters.
Moreover, the monsters had terrifying, grotesque faces.
Their mouths were huge, taking up almost their entire heads, and were filled with sharp, needle-like teeth—just looking at them sent chills down people's spines.
When everyone saw the sky filled with these monsters, their faces instantly turned deathly pale, drained of all color.
Civilians stared at the approaching monsters, frozen in place, as though they had lost the ability to think.
It wasn't that they couldn't think, but that no matter how much they tried, they couldn't come up with any way to survive.
They were completely at a loss.
With all the military forces deployed on the frontlines, how could a few traffic police officers hope to stop these terrifying creatures?
Everyone knew the answer.
Tonight was destined to be a night of death!
"Get down! Get down!!" Captain Zheng shouted until his voice was hoarse.
His expression, though filled with fear, still carried a resolve that was ready to face death.
"Students, prepare for battle!" Old Liu yelled as he drew his saber, his demeanor shifting to one of unyielding determination.
Chen Ye took a deep breath.
He knew.
It was time for him to act!
With so many civilians and children here, if he didn't step in and save them, the guilt would haunt him for the rest of his life.
Having no power was one thing.
But having the power to help and doing nothing? He couldn't live with himself if he let that happen.
"Squad Leader, you handle the east. Leave this side to me!" Chen Ye shouted.
This area was the bustling part of the city, and there were more monsters here.
Tang Zichen looked at him for a moment, then nodded resolutely.
Her body emitted a green glow as she flew toward the east.
Many civilians, upon seeing her, immediately recognized who she was.
After all, there were only two people in the country with such abilities, making it easy to identify.
"Is that Lady Qin? We're saved!!"
"No, that's Tang Zichen from Wuda University, one of the top geniuses of the S2 rank. I didn't expect she could already fly."
"Why did she leave? Is she abandoning us?"
"Let her leave. With so many monsters, staying here wouldn't make a difference, and she might even lose her life."
"Don't talk nonsense! She didn't leave; she's clearly going to defend the other side."
"Then who's going to protect us?"
"Forget it. Just cherish these last moments with your family!"
"Wife, I've been a failure my whole life, but the one thing I'm proud of is marrying you..."
...
Many citizens, having resigned themselves to their fate, chose to embrace their loved ones.
It wasn't that they didn't want to run, but the roads were completely blocked, making escape impossible.
Pfft!
Just as despair gripped everyone, a small flame suddenly ignited...
