The village buzzed with whispered conversations about Rina's bold move. Her mark on Li Wei was both a declaration and a challenge to the other females. While Serathis seethed quietly, her icy demeanor masking the storm within, others, like Charlotte and Diana, debated their next steps.
Li Wei, however, was far from interested in the brewing tension. As the rare male, he felt more like a pawn in a game he never chose to play. Standing at the edge of the forest, he stared out into the horizon, lost in thought.
Rina approached cautiously, her mark on his neck glowing faintly in the evening light. "You're upset," she said softly.
Li Wei turned, his expression unreadable. "What did you expect, Rina? You made a decision for both of us without even asking me."
Her shoulders dropped, but she stood her ground. "I did what I had to, Li Wei. You don't understand the pressure we feel. Males are rare, and the future of our kind depends on bonds like ours."
He frowned. "I get that. But you're not just trying to preserve our kind. You're staking claims, like I'm a prize to be won."
Rina flinched but didn't back down. "You're more than a prize, Li Wei. You're someone I care about deeply. I couldn't stand by and let others take you away without showing you how much you mean to me."
Her words softened his resolve. While her actions frustrated him, he couldn't deny the sincerity in her voice.
"Rina," he began, his voice calmer, "I don't want to hurt you, or anyone else for that matter. But this… this situation is overwhelming. I'm not used to being at the center of everything."
She stepped closer, her hand brushing his. "Then let me help you. Let me be the one you lean on."
Before Li Wei could respond, a voice interrupted them.
"Am I interrupting something?"
They turned to see Charlotte standing nearby, her arms crossed and an amused smile playing on her lips. Unlike Rina's earnest demeanor, Charlotte exuded confidence and playfulness.
"Charlotte," Rina said, her tone laced with irritation. "What do you want?"
"Oh, nothing much," Charlotte replied, stepping closer. "Just thought I'd remind Li Wei that he has other admirers who might be better suited to his needs."
Li Wei sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Not this again…"
Charlotte ignored his exasperation and continued, "Look, Rina, you've made your move. Good for you. But don't think for a second that the rest of us are giving up."
Rina bristled, her hands curling into fists. "He's already mine. That mark proves it."
"And yet," Charlotte said with a smirk, "it doesn't stop others from trying. That's how things work in our world, isn't it?"
Li Wei stepped between them, his tone firm. "Enough. I'm not interested in being the reason for any more arguments. If you both care about me, then respect what I want for a change."
The tension hung in the air, but Charlotte eventually shrugged. "Fair enough. For now."
She turned and walked away, leaving Rina and Li Wei alone once more.
Li Wei sat by the fire in the village square, his mind still swirling with thoughts of Rina's claim and the other females' advances. Serathis approached quietly, her serpent-like grace making her movements almost imperceptible.
"May I join you?" she asked, her voice colder than usual.
He nodded, and she sat beside him, her gaze fixed on the flames.
"You're upset," she said, mirroring Rina's earlier observation.
"Everyone keeps telling me how I feel," he muttered. "Maybe I should just accept it and stop thinking for myself."
Serathis turned to him, her piercing eyes locking onto his. "You have every right to feel overwhelmed. But you also have a duty, to yourself and to this village. Whether you like it or not, you're special, Li Wei. You can either fight it or embrace it."
"And what about you?" he asked, meeting her gaze. "You marked me first, but you've been quiet since Rina's claim. Why?"
Her lips curved into a faint smile. "Because I'm not like Rina or the others. I don't need to fight for your attention. I know my place in your life."
Her confidence was both reassuring and unsettling. Li Wei wasn't sure if she truly accepted the situation or if she was planning her next move in silence.
As they sat in companionable silence, a sudden commotion erupted at the edge of the village. Shouts and the sound of heavy footsteps filled the air.
Li Wei stood, his heart racing. "What now?"
A group of villagers emerged, carrying torches and weapons. At their center was Diana, her face flushed with anger.
"This has gone far enough," she declared, pointing at Li Wei. "You've been claimed twice now, but this village deserves better. You can't play favorites while the rest of us wait our turn."
The crowd murmured in agreement, their frustration palpable.
Li Wei raised his hands, trying to calm them. "I'm not playing favorites. This isn't a game to me."
"Then prove it," Diana challenged, stepping forward. "Accept me as your mate, or face the consequences of rejecting this village's traditions."
Serathis moved to Li Wei's side, her eyes narrowing dangerously. "You don't get to dictate his choices, Diana. Back off."
The tension reached a boiling point as the villagers watched, waiting to see what Li Wei would do next.
He took a deep breath, his mind racing. No matter what decision he made, it would have lasting consequences. But one thing was clear: he couldn't keep avoiding the reality of his situation.
"I'll… think about it," he said finally, his voice steady despite the chaos around him.
The crowd dispersed reluctantly, leaving Li Wei, Serathis, and Diana standing in the flickering firelight.
"You're going to have to make a choice eventually," Serathis said quietly.
"I know," Li Wei replied, his voice heavy with resignation. "But not tonight."
