Chapter 49

OCEAN

THE NEXT MORNING WAS QUIET. Yesterday everyone wiped the food off the walls and furniture and we returned to Levi's parents' house to shower before everyone retreated to their rooms for the night even though it was four in the afternoon.

Levi and Wyatt were upstairs getting ready before we planned to make a grand exit, and I paced downstairs in the kitchen. I wanted to stay out of everybody's way but was too scared to go hide in the car by myself.

"Oh, you're awake," Levi's mom said as she came down the stairs wearing a long robe.

Worried, I looked one direction and then the other. "I can leave." I didn't know where I'd go but I'd find a place. Anything had to be better than being yelled at or dealing with his mom alone.

She shook her head with sorrow in her eyes. "No, Ocean, I owe you an apology. Come and sit." She led me to the kitchen table where we'd drunk mimosas and I pulled out a chair across from her.
