Chapter 7
"Are those new?" Kyline asked, gesturing towards my converse. Kyline is my classmate we have a conversation sometimes so we are a little bit close
"Yeah," I said as we moved up in the concession stand line. "First time out of the box"
"To a basketball game?. You may not like them"
I laughed, stepping up to make my order "M&M's and a bottle of water please" I ordered pulling a couple of bucks in my back pocket. I paid for my order and then stepped to the side while Kylie ordered her Skittles and Water.
"Hey girls." Jed, our classmate greeted us as we took our seats next to him in the bleachers.
I crossed my right leg over my left while watching the opposing team warm up for a few seconds before focusing on our team. I spotted Xander immediately he looks tired but it doesn't reduce his handsomeness. Maybe he felt that someone instantly staring at him so he look around and our eyes met. I smiled at him and wave my hand mouthing good luck. He smiled and wave back.
After a few minutes, the games started.
"Your boy better do us proud" Jed commented as the game started.
"I have a complete faith in him," I said.
No sooner than the words left my mouth, Xander and his team shots missed. Jed just harrumphed.
"Oh shut up," I said casting him a look. It's not like you're the one out there."
Kyline giggles. "Lighten up guys. It's the only first quarter. And then the second quarter came across but still no sign of the team improvement.
Half-time score 63-32 in favor of S- University. I'm worried about the team they seem having trouble
"Xander doesn't seem to be on top of his game today." Someone from the crowd commented
I looked at Xander is he nervous?. It hasn't been long since he played basketball maybe he doesn't quite get the feeling yet. I want to go to him and hug him but non-players are not allowed to go there throughout the game.
So I build up my courage I stand up and shout "GO XANDER!!!! GO, BABE!!!! GO LIONS!!! YOU CAN DO IT" after I shouted it reality strikes me students from other schools and our school look at me. I look at Xander's team they are looking at me then they started laughing and said thank you. Xander looked at me like he was saying that's my girl. I suddenly think that I hope I can the land will eat me up for me to get out of this embarrassment. I slowly went back to my sit.
"THAT SHOULD BE IT!!!! GO LIONS!!!!" someone from our school shouted so the cheers from each school started.
Third-quarter started. You can sense the nervousness in the crowd the ball is in our team. S University's defense is great Xander's team seems can't get then suddenly his teammate passes the ball to him then he shoots the ball
"3 POINTS!!!!!" The cheers erupted from the crowds.
"YAAAAHH!!!!That's my boy!!!" I yelled while clapping. I don't care if people looked at me. That's the Xander I know and that attitude carried throughout the rest of the game.
The third quarter ended with a score of 72-62 still in favor of S University. At last, they found their momentum
The fourth or the last quarter started. It seems both teams are heating. Both teams didn't want to lose they score one after another. 10 seconds remaining and the score is 108-107 still in favor of S University the ball is in our team. S university defense tighten keeping our team from scoring. Xander's teammate trying to pass through their defense. 2 seconds remaining when suddenly Xander rushes over and gestures to his teammate to pass him the ball. His teammate passed it to him the Xander dribbled to the tree point lane then he stopped and shoot. The moment he let go of the ball I clasp my hand silently praying that the ball would go in. You can feel the pressure in the air. You can hear the tense breathing of the crowds.
*shoot* *buzzer*
*a moment of silence*
The lions take home the win under Xander's leadership. I stood up from my sit then I started to shout
"Xander!!! That's my boy!!! Congratulations!! Lions!!".
After the game, I bid goodbye to Kyline and Jed stating that I will go to the bench where Xander and his teammates are.
"Congratulations guys!! You did great!!" I said while walking towards them. Xander smiled when he saw me. I hugged him then he kissed my forehead.
"How was the game?" Bryce asked.
"You guys look awful at first but you get better in the second half" I honestly said.
Xander intertwined his fingers with mine "That's what I like about you"
"What's that?"
" You don't try to sugarcoat it."
"Well, you asked" I pointed out.
"I did," he agreed. "And I want the truth"
"And the truth is that it is truly awful at first but when the second half begins you guys are truly great!"
"That is because you cheered for us," Louis said and the other guys nodded like they are agreeing with what he said. Louis is someone from the team. I feel that they are stopping themselves from laughing and I suddenly recalled one of my embarrassing moments earlier. I felt my cheeks heat. I looked down.
" Catch you tonight?" Louis asked Xander. Xander just smiled.
"What's up?" I asked. It was Friday which means clubbing time for them.
"I don't think I'm going out tonight."
"What's the matter?" I asked, stopping from my tracks.
"I'm just tired"
"I think you're getting sick babe," I said reaching up to his forehead. It has sweaty which I wasn't expecting, and I couldn't help but let out a squeal. I thought he wiped his sweat earlier.
"And I'm pretty sure you're not a doctor," he said while laughing.
"Are you really okay?"
"Yes, I am okay. I'm just going home and sleep" He answered. " I bet I'll feel a hundred times better in the morning."
"Okay, you go home and go straight to bed."
"Yes ma'am" We reached his car and he gave me one last kiss on my forehead
"Go out and have fun tonight" he encouraged.
I shrugged. "It's not much fun without you"
"Well, I am the life of the party." I gave him a good shove and he laughed.
"Yes you are right" I reluctantly agreed with him ' You go on your way now, I'll see you tomorrow."
And with that, he entered his car and drove away.
