Hell's Emissary - The Legendary Tamer

My skin bears reminders of yesterday. They are roadside markers of my trips and falls, remnants I intend to burn to ashes, place in an urn and bury somewhere. People tell me to move on. Build a bridge. Get over it. When you clench your teeth and forge ahead you convince yourself the mind can be a clean slate untainted by dark colors of past trauma. You pretend that your skies will always be clear. A palette of gold and red, sunrise and sunset. Yet in sunshine a dark shadow lingers behind us every step. Our shadow wilfully follows, keeps pace with every step. I unclenched my teeth, ran my fingers along my scars. They whispered to me. I listened. I held hands with my shadow, now we walk together. Some scars never heal but how else could I know the way forward?.. So, I claim this body, this mind, this life as my own. And while I wish to share this life in kindness, compassion and empathy with others, I will not hesitate to defend when threatened. ... "...and when you wake in the morning finding that you still lie in hell, lick your lips, spit on the flames, and walk on through the fire."

A True Friend

"Well, as you can see am already this battered. I was hoping that you would at least show mercy. By the way, we are besties." I told Toothless with a weird smile plastered on my face as I couldn't help but think of the consequences that I would be in with another broken bone.

With the current state that I was in, I was lucky enough to have survived the ordeal. Yet he thinks of nothing else but to add more misery to his dear friend.

I don't know how we became such good friends in the first place but looking at him now, I couldn't help but wonder what kind of a personality does he have?

"I'll have to do it one way or another. You know how my sister is, she is probably furious right now thinking that I got you into this mess." Toothless let out a sigh after saying that.

It made me wonder, who's his sister?

And again why would she be furious with her brother for getting me into trouble? Well, I thought that blood was thicker than water yet all that I was hearing now, made me change my mind on certain things.

"Your sister?.. Why would you be in trouble because of me?" I asked this time a little bit perplexed with how our conversation was going on.

Smack!

"Oh, Mother Goddess please help us." Toothless smacked his forehead before displaying a look of great disbelief.

"I can't believe it. They cracked a nut in there. So... You mean to say that you have forgotten even your mother?"

Hahaha! Hahahaha!

"You are so dead my friend. For you to forget the two most caring people in your life? You are as good as dead, brother." Toothless continued with a look of amusement as he kept laughing like a crazy old man.

"So are you gonna talk or blubber like a lady?" I asked as I was getting frustrated by each of his laughs. It's like he was enjoying my misfortune.

"Oi. You can't wait, can you? Alright. So you don't have to worry about my sister that much, she always blames everything that goes wrong with our plans on me... Like how I got you beaten up by your mother and so on. Don't think much about her. Okay?" Toothless sounded like he was hiding something but what I heard was good already and I didn't want to know anything that could be much worse than what am currently in.

"Okay, now would you please tell me why are we locked up in here?" I asked attempting to cut him off in whatever unnecessary things he was going to say next.

"If it will make you satisfied, then prepare for the shocking truth." Toothless said as he rubbed his hands together in anticipation and with a wicked smile on his face.

"We planned to steal from the palace kitchens again, but for the last time because of your illness... And... Wait, how are you well all of a sudden?" He jerked from a sudden realization and scooted near inspecting me in great detail.

"..."

Tears rolled down Toothless cheeks as he muttered a small prayer to whoever he was praying to. The tears made my heart move as I figured that something terrible must have happened to see such a reaction from him.

"I was, sick?.. Or am I still sick?" I asked as I felt weird but not worse as he describes it.

"Okay, so let me start from the beginning." He said as he got himself comfortable in a cross-legged posture.

"As you were on your death bed, it pained everyone. At least every commoner. But you still touched the hearts of a few nobles and two royals..." Toothless started the narrative but I couldn't believe anything as I couldn't even remember my mother, and so to say the things he was saying.

"I have to say, that for a commoner like ourselves. And for you to garner the attention of a few high-class members of the society, am a little envious you know." Toothless said and went into a trance probably thinking what he could have asked for if he was in my position.

"Probably you would have taken the Kingdom to the grave with you." I said with scorn on my face.

"I would say that you are right. Think of all the things I would have asked for in your place. And I know for a fact that you could have got anything if you could have just asked." Toothless said again this time having a sharp gaze directed into my visage.

"Okay just continue, don't make me wait any longer. What if I die?" I said a little impatient as I was feeling like I have gone to hell and back from the pain that I was feeling.

"So as we always do when you were well and kicking. We would sneak inside the palace kitchens and take what we can carry... Don't give me that look, we were just fed up with how our food is every day. Just the same. And they get to eat whatever they want." I gave Toothless a weird look as I thought that it was disgusting for one to steal food even if you know that a dog would be treated well than you.

"We have been surviving like that since we were of age. And two nights ago wasn't any different from all the other times... It was just that you were dying from that disease and I just wanted you to have a good meal for the last time..." Tears rolled down Toothless cheeks and he turned his face the other way around when he noticed that I was starring.

It was good to have a partner in crime. But it was better to have a brother at it. I said from my heart at that moment; that whoever was kind to me, I would also be kind to them in return and that started with Toothless.

"Having a brother like you is better than dying." I comforted him as I knew that such people were one in a million. And spaced far enough from one another.

"So two nights ago was slightly different, you were on your death bed and couldn't move a finger. But we agreed for you to meet me at the back window so that I could escape unnoticed." Toothless continued after coming down. For a guy like him, he was too emotional for my sake. And that kept me wondering, what kind of adventures did we do to have such a close bond.

"How was I to meet you off when I was bedridden? Or were you that dumb?" I asked absent-mindedly without even considering his feelings.

"Ouch! That hurts. Nobody knew that you could move about with the help of something except me. You were like a zombie, once you had your sights set upon a task, it was like the illness just disappears." He said with a hint of admiration in his eyes.

"Sorry for that." I sincerely apologized.

"Sure... You had to meet me so that you could open the windows from the outside. But you can guess what happened next." Toothless said as he let out a sigh.

"So I was your escape plan, but you were caught all the same. So... that means that I didn't come through with our plans? Then what was I doing for I not to aid you and also be out of bed at the same time? But even if I was out of bed, I wouldn't be here now. I did something bad on the way, didn't I?"

I pieced the information together as much as I could, but there was something still missing. Something so important to have had me realize that I was being chased in the forest.

"Then what did I do to be in this situation?" I asked probably eager to learn of my sins as I couldn't remember anything.

"With that brother, I don't know what you did. But I guess it to be so bad that even the guards don't think twice to smack you down, with your status although a commoner just like the rest of us." He answered probably a bit jealous from the tone and facial expressions that he was able to display.

I was left speechless and my mind wandered far just to think of something that would make me understand all of this.

It wasn't fair to me, I guess it isn't fair to everyone. But still, from being bedridden to being chased in the forest by that enormous dog and several people though I was eight years old just like Toothless himself.

But the thing that made me be left in awe, was the fact that I garnered the attention of two royals and a few nobles. What kind of status do I hold for me to do that much.

All I knew was that, from commoners to nobles and lastly to royals. Everyone had their kind of lifestyle and the commoners were always left out in everything as they didn't have anything to their name.

At this moment, there was one thing that I could do. Wait for my sentence.
