Exploring the top floors

The strange humanoid creature fumbled like a crazed animal waving its claws, its jaw seemed to have been dislocated showing its torn tongue and blood-stained razor-sharp teeth. This scene has already gripped Marc Lee's heart in horror.

Ting!

The sharp metallic high-pitched sound made Marc Lee's heart quiver. He didn't expect that he'd be so unlucky as to hit the hard stone-like object protruding on the creature's forehead. As the knife slides it directly went inside one of the creature's eyes. The knife enters and because of the momentum of the creature, it penetrated towards the back of its head destroying a part of its brain.

His ragged breathing seems to slow and his tensed body relaxed as the zombie halted its movements. Then all of a sudden a low shriek can be heard from inside its head. And since Marc Lee is close to the zombie creature's head he clearly heard it.

"What the heck was that?" he was startled and quickly pushed the corpse to the side.

Marc Lee was once again tensed after hearing that shriek. But seeing that the creature is not moving, he began to relax a bit.

He slowly stood up, pulled the spear from the zombie's head, and carefully entered the condo. Although the stench inside almost made him puke, he still pushes through and just covered his nose.

Then on the ground, he saw a corpse which is almost just bones that seems to belong to a man judging from the scattered clothing on the floor. It's like the body has been eaten by the zombie woman for a long time now.

What was left is just some flesh dangling from his arms and legs. Marc Lee wanted to know why the man didn't turn into a zombie but found that the almost skeleton carcass has no head.

Marc Lee didn't linger long in the place as it is really too disgusting, and he almost puked many times. After dragging the zombie woman inside the condo he closed the door.

"I'll just clean that place later, it may have its use." He then continues on checking the other rooms.

Marc Lee didn't find any more zombies inside the other condos which made him feel at ease. At least now he is sure that the floor he is on is already safe.

"Hmmm… I wonder what that thing on her forehead is." Marc Lee muttered as he suddenly remembers the stone-like protrusion like a small horn on the zombie's head.

He wanted to check it out but decide against it as he is still not used to that disgusting smell. He would just find a way to study it later. He needs to sweep every room first for some provisions and water. That way he could have a better chance of survival.

He discovered that in one of the rooms, the bathtub is full of water. He then checked it and found that it is clean. This made him feel excited as it's been a long time since he hadn't taken a bath. So with prudence, he just took a portion of the water and washed his body.

"Ahhh… This is life." He muttered as his body feels refreshed.

That night, after eating, he sits on the sofa and looked at the sky. He reminisces of the peaceful days that he spent inside his flat and the joy he felt earning his own money.

"Sigh… until now I didn't even know how long I've been asleep. This is too frustrating." Marc Lee mused.

Thud!

Marc Lee was jolted from his stupor after hearing a loud sound coming from the top floor. It seems like something really heavy fell. It sounded a bit suspicious. Though he didn't know if there are zombies in that place, he didn't want to find out.

Marc Lee decided to just let it be and started to doze off.

The next morning…

After doing his regular exercises, Marc Lee decided to check the other floors. He didn't dare do it last night because it was too dark and that would be really dangerous, but right now it's different.

He once again carries the make-shift spear and prepares himself for another day of exploration.

Marc Lee just wore simple clothing and jeans. He already knew that he is immune to the virus or whatever, plus his body can heal, so he is not worried about getting hurt. The only concern he has is being encumbered and of course the pain.

He slowly opens the door and walks towards the emergency stairs.

When he passed by the other room with the body of the zombie, he suddenly smell the nauseating stench of rotting flesh.

"I'll clean that up later." He muttered as he continues walking towards the emergency exit.

Marc Lee slowly twisted the knob and carefully peeked through a small opening. Since he could not hear or smell anything, he carefully enters the staircase.

He then looks at the number on the side of the door which is 4, which corresponds to the floor he is in. The next two floors up belong to those who have money to spend as those have bigger space.

Although Marc Lee can afford to buy a place like that, except he is a money-grubber, he prefers to spend less and live comfortably at the same time.

"Let's start off on the fifth floor." Marc Lee thought as he slowly went up the stairs.

A low click sounded and a foul stench quickly wafted out assaulting his nose. His eyes went wide in disbelief as he discovers that a bunch of zombies are on that floor.

From the clothes those zombies are wearing, he could deduce that there seems to be a party celebration in this place. The people started getting infected one by one and they were not able to escape maybe because of alcohol intoxication.

Seeing that the numbers of the zombies are far too many, Marc Lee didn't want to get their attention so he carefully closes the door with a click.

But then…

Thud! Thud!

Marc Lee scrambled backward as his heart almost leaped out of his throat as banging sounds began to hit the door. In his panic, Marc Lee rushed upwards to the sixth floor. Though panicking, he didn't want to attract those zombies to his safe house.

Without stopping, he quickly opens the door and jumped inside never putting to mind the darkness which immediately swallowed him. All he can think of right now is to escape that horde of rotting zombies from the 5th floor.

He kept his body leaning on the door, as his ears are directly listening to the sounds outside. His beating heart is like hundreds of hooves crashing towards his chest. As time went by, he didn't notice how long it took for him to just stand there and waited without moving an inch.

"I guess those things didn't come out or chase after me. Whew… that was close." He muttered as he heaves a sigh of relief.

All of a sudden his face turned pale as he remembers that he didn't yet check this floor yet, before barging inside. With a stiff movement, he slowly turns his, and then what greeted him is...

The dark corridor…

It seems that the whole area has neither soul nor any shadow walking around.

"Whew, luckily this area is a zombie-free area. I… I would have been dead because of my carelessness." Marc Lee thought while patting his chest.

The light, as usual, is coming from beneath the doors of the condos. It also seems that this floor has only 3 big condos, where two are facing each other and the other one is in the middle facing the elevator. Marc Lee carefully approached the first room and found that the door is locked the same goes with the second room. Then he walked carefully towards the room in the middle.

With a slight twist of the knob the door opened, which means it was not locked. This made Marc Lee feels a little excited and scared at the same time as he didn't know what was inside the room.

Then all of a sudden an eerie feeling made him alert, he knows that he should not make any mistake this time… so he prepares himself for any surprises.

As the door makes the creaking sound, Marc Lee carefully peeked inside.

When he could not smell any foul or nauseating odor or hear any suspicious sounds, he heaves a sigh of relief and pushed the door a little wider.

What he could hear though is the sound of wind blowing from the outside which made the condition of the room a bit cool.

He then carefully checked the huge condo, which seems to be a lot bigger than his flat and there is also a nice balcony located outside a top to the bottom glass wall. But before he could continue roaming his gaze around, he noticed that there is a shadow outside that balcony.

It looks like a woman wearing her pajamas and her messy blonde hair draping on her face which he could not clearly see.

The zombie is pacing back and forth in a sluggish motion as it could not go anywhere else.

He wanted to make a move and try to attract its attention when he suddenly noticed that there is actually another figure which is a little shorter than the woman. That the figure is just lying on top of the table and a long barbecue fork is embedded in its head.

Marc Lee heaves a sigh in this situation… at least he is going to face just one zombie. From the look of the things, it seems that there should be another person in these rooms but that person may have run out leaving the door open after trapping the woman in the balcony and killing that child zombie on the table.

"I can do this…" he thought as he grips the make-shift spear with both hands and slowly approaches the balcony.

What he didn't realize is that the door to the balcony might be closed, but some of the windows are open which caused the wind to flow inside. The gush of air flowing freely inside the house is the factor that seemed to have eliminated some of the odor that could have stayed inside the house.

As he steps closer, he didn't notice that another figure is slowly moving soundlessly towards him coming from the kitchen. That figure slowly reveals its sharp teeth as it drew closer behind Marc Lee.

"Huh, I think… something is…" he suddenly stopped and became alert as he smelled something.

He then heard a sound from behind and without hesitation swings his spear. Luckily for him, his reflexes became faster. He saw the small figure and he controlled the direction of the swing. This has caused the blade of the knife to directly slice its head off, decapitating the zombie.

Thud!

The small head which seems to belong to a child rolled on the floor and the black blood from the body spewed out like a fountain.

That sound jolted the female zombie outside the balcony from her sluggishness.

"Grawl!"

The female zombie howled as she crazily ran towards the glass wall. But the reinforced glass didn't budge and bounced the zombie backward pushing her near the balcony railings. Upon seeing this, Marc Lee didn't wait and quickly grab the opportunity to rush up.

With the speed that he himself didn't know he has he was able to open the door and walk to the balcony. And in just a few seconds, he is already outside facing the female zombie.

Without hesitation, he quickly drew back the spear and with all his might stabbed it directly towards the zombie's head. The spear penetrated the skull as the knife's edge enters from the dislocated jaw of the female zombie into her skull damaging her brain.

The zombie's body began twitching after it falls to the ground as Marc Lee retracts his spear. It then stopped moving after a few seconds.

"Whew… That was too dangerous. I almost got sneaked attacked, I should be warier of my surroundings next time." he thought as he once again checked the condo.

He didn't want to touch those bodies yet as he would feel nauseous. Plus, although he knew that he is somewhat immune, he did not become complacent.

According to his experience, biting might not be the cause of the spread of infection.

And because of this, he dares not try other things just to be on the safe side.

He slowly backtracks and checked the rooms inside the house. He saw the picture of a family of four. From what he saw, it seems that the father is the one who ran away and left his family as they turn into zombies.

"Tsk, Tsk…" is all that Marc Lee could say as he himself could not judge what the man did.

He then checked the balcony and found out that he can actually cross over it with some effort.

"Okay, let's see what's on the other side." Marc Lee muttered.

He didn't know what drives him to do these things. It may be boredom or curiosity, or he just wanted to seek other people as he didn't want to accept the fact that he is the only human being left alive in this place.

He carefully scaled the fence blocking the balcony. He looks at the other side and judged the distance.

Then with all his might, he jumped to the other railing.

He discovered that his strength has already improved and that this single jump actually took him directly inside the other balcony.

He wasn't able to control his body on his land and hits the glass wall.

Thud!

"Shit! That was too careless. Damn it." He cursed but also was amazed at how strong he had become.

Then his eyes immediately became alert as he quickly scanned the inside of the other house.

His eyes suddenly caught a figure lying on the sofa.

That figure is just lying still, so he carefully opened the balcony which seemed to be unlocked and approached the living room. Marc Lee's eyes became suspicious as now he can clearly see the thin body of a woman lying sleeping on the sofa.

But he did not feel safe, so he lifted the spear and prepares to thrust it towards her head in case anything happened.

His heart once again began to race as he approaches.
