He's Not My Type

Elijah has a type. He likes older, sophisticated, mature men. Well-educated men. Men with life experience and passion for arts and social causes. Men who are established in their careers, who've sorted their lives out. His type was Mason Meyers, the doctor he'd met shortly after starting university, and who, last Elijah heard, was still on an extended humanitarian trip to Ghana. His type was Yunis Carter, the postgrad who'd organized open-mic poetry readings at the art gallery before he moved to London last summer. And his type was Nick Davidson, the sociology lecturer with his own weekly independent radio programme, who'd been Elijah's longest relationship right up until they broke up before the Easter holidays. Pieter knows this. And so Elijah can't understand why he's sat here opposite Christian Marshal. To be fair, Christian is older than him. But only by two years. And he certainly doesn't have his life figured out. He works in the record shop where Pieter sometimes gives guitar lessons in the basement. He was in a not-so-successful pop-punk band until they split up and now he posts not-so-popular YouTube song covers. When he's not too busy pranking his housemate, his hobbies include playing footie and playing video games. His speech is almost exaggeratedly from Doncaster. He's never been to uni. His travel experience is limited to clubbing in Amsterdam. Elijah stays to learn all this because he's polite. But he knew as soon as he'd met him outside the pub, leaning against the brick wall with a cigarette dangling between tattooed fingers, beat-up skateboard propped beside him, that this was never going to work.

MELODY OF THE DARKNESS

Once upon a time, in a strange village nestled deep within a dense forest, there was a legend about the Melody of Darkness. It was said that in the pitch-black darkness and the darkest of nights, when the moon was veiled behind thick clouds, an extraordinary melody emanated from the depths of the village. The villagers whispered tales of this strange and unfamiliar melody, and many believed it to be a call of threat from the monsters that dwelled in the shadows. It shook the tranquility of the village, and the tunes of horror played throughout their days, without them realizing the source of this phenomenon that appeared from time to time without warning. Rosalyn, a young and ambitious woman with a pure heart, radiating a luminous aura like a shining light, was born. But who would have known that this innocent star would one day fade away and transform into a curse of darkness? After perceiving the world with sincere intentions, she encountered a corrupted and dark reflection of it, leading her to fall into disappointment and despair, shattering the image she had built about the world since her early days. Rosealin was a curious young woman, especially when it came to hearing the conversations that circulated in her village. Despite her somewhat secluded nature, the concept of the Melody of Darkness captivated her attention and filled her with astonishment. She spent countless nights gazing at the moon, hoping to catch a glimpse of the hidden messages carried by the winds. One day, as the village prepared for the approaching dark night, Rosalyn decided to take her steps towards uncovering the secrets behind the mysterious melody...

Slow burns be damned, the author takes a faster approach to the romance game. A very bare bones description of the world, readers are free to imagine what the school and the world around it is like. The main character Remmy isn’t one for soft flowery language, indeed it’s quite the opposite. Being the narrator of her story provides an aggressive lens through which to see her tale. Rather simplistic, she doesn’t bother to describe other characters; major or minor, or even herself. It allows for a streamlined storytelling, and rapid character development. Though one has to wonder if it works for the romance world. I’m writing this when there’s only three chapters, so we’ll have to see. The author should look to improve their grammar and syntax but the text is not totally unreadable. I always love a Tough Girl meets a Princess, but in this case it’s quite literal. I’m looking forward to seeing certain questions answered. Keep up the work!
