Nessa had never felt fear like that before, the real fear of someone dying in front of her, the real fear of losing someone while she stared helplessly. It had crippled and almost turned her crazy. 

It was quite funny that Mrs. Claire ended up comforting her instead of her - Nessa- doing so. The woman was brave, she had not shed a tear while Nessa still had snot running down her nose. 

Nessa knew she was being heartless, rather she was trying to stay strong. Mrs. Claire was trying to be positive. Moreover, being this calm meant this wasn't the first time such a thing has happened. 

Thankfully, Nessa was done bawling her eyes out when Damon's father arrived. It was a huge shocker to her - Damon had never talked about his father and she had never bothered to ask him. God, how self-centered had she been? She knew almost nothing about him.
