Chapter 15

Luke, the younger and arguably cuter of the two human brothers who owned the brewery, came by Uncommon Grounds more and more frequently. At first this was work, though fun work: discussing the collaboration, flavor profiles, cold brew notes, the merits of aging in different barrels. Luke was eager and knowledgeable and passionate about the craft of beer, and Don liked talking to him; Luke started dropping in nearly every day, even days they hadn’t planned to meet up, talking and gesturing and rumpling up his own white-blond hair in excitement. He sometimes leaned closer, let his hands touch Don’s shoulders, arms, a thigh if they sat close enough.

Don, who was not oblivious, was flattered but not interested. Luke might’ve been his type—big sweet blue eyes, jawline an enticing mix of pretty and masculine, made of enthusiasm and vibrant energy—but the spark just wasn’t there.
