Boyhood

Now, three months have passed since the first time I woke up in that house. Many things happen, especially strange things. Working as a hired farmer is one thing, but having your voice, looks, and body change sure is something.

After I calm myself down from all of these situations which took around a week. I began to sort my thought. After all, my voice has changed, and my height doesn't differ much from the past me so I didn't notice it right away.

After that day, I learn to do farmwork from the scratch again, but thankfully the previous owner of this body seems to only do some menial work and help his father around the farm, so I can learn it fast and lie my way through the work. Never underestimate the power of a jobless person in pinch okay?

"Get a grip boy", The old man usually said when I make a mistake like a first-timer.

He actually thinks that I'm in a sad mood after "what happened yesterday". I don't have a clear picture of what kind of event that is, but if he thinks like that, the owner of this body seems to be really affected by that event and I believe that it's an important event so I have to know more about it as I'm now somehow living inside his body, so whatever he deemed important, must be important for me too.

Oh, I also found out that the old man is the father of this body, so it's given that the old woman is my mother.

Luckily the farmwork didn't require much brain power so I can sort my thought while I work. Even for now, while feeding the chicken, I can still sort my thought. I know it seems dumb, but I guess I ain't living in the same world as my previous one. The reason is that the word "magic" often come out of my parent's mouth these past 3 months.

After digging for information about that "event", I found out that the real owner of this body of mine is just your regular farmer's son with big ambition. The thing is, he wants to learn magic at the magic academy. There's nothing wrong with that, but the general knowledge in this world is magic is something exclusive to the rich and nobles. Some poor guys may be able to learn magic, but it requires dedication, talent, money, and often luck on top of that.

I'm a realistic person. Indeed learning magic is great and I'd be lying if I say I don't want to learn it. But the real owner of this body doesn't know any magic the same as me. I don't know anything about magic or any prerequisite to learn it so I might as well forget it for now. But if the opportunity arises, I want to learn more about magic in this world.

At first, I thought that I was given a second chance in life, but it seems like this life is no better than my previous one. Well, at least my depression seems gone for now. I do still have my worry about my future here, but it's not as bleak as the previous one.

Indeed I may be destined to be a farm worker my whole life here. But hey, it's not that bad when I think about it. As it's general knowledge here that a kid without any talent in other fields will continue their parent's job. So I don't get the pressure like in my previous life.

My only regret is that I won't get any chance to enjoy modern technology entertainment like in my previous world. But life in the countryside is just as simple as that. Even seeing the sun sets from the fields still seems beautiful now.

From what I've seen, the population of this countryside don't surpass 1000, I might be wrong but I've seen several familiar faces here and there a few times. This place may as well be some rural area on the corner of the country it resides. I don't even know the name of this place, does it have a name?

I remember reading isekai web novels in my previous life where the main protagonist just want to be a farmer in another world because he was so tired of everything in his previous life and now I kind of understand his feeling a little haha.

"Hey Neil, how's work today?", Says some teenage boy that the previous owner of this body knows.

By the way, Neil seems to be the name of this body owner. I usually finish my work earlier than my father so sometimes I ask his permission to rest in a small and simple house without a wall just a simple roof over it in the middle of the paddy fields. Seeing the sunset among the paddy fields seems to be my hobby now.

"Nothing much Jed. How about you?"

Jed seems to be the same age as the real owner of this body. He also helps his dad with farm work like me. I could estimate that this body is around 14 to 15 years old. And just as usual, a conversation like this may seem boring at first but I've learned to enjoy it as there's no topic to be talked about in this countryside. I don't know whether it's the change of my mind or the influence of the original body owner that makes me like this. But watching the sunset makes me forget about all those things right now.

"Neil", Called Jed as we watch the sunset

"What ?"

"Do you have any specific plan for the future ?"

"Something like a dream you mean ?"

"Yeah, something like that"

What a thought-provoking question coming from this simple boy. I stare at his face as he sees the distance ahead. This boy, could he also have a dream outside of being a farm worker?

"I guess I'll just continue my dad's job, like for now", Replied me while still staring at his face, "Why do you ask Jed?"

"I always want to be an adventurer, Neil", Replied him while turning his head towards the sky.

An adventurer huh? It's a cliche troupe for transmigration stories in web novels nowadays. Why has it never crossed my mind before? even the magic academy exists so the adventurer guild should exist too right?

"Why do you suddenly want to be an adventurer?"

"It's been my long-time dream, Neil, I just don't have the courage to tell everyone as you do", he said with a self-deprecating smile, "Traveling around the world freely, meeting new people, and those adventure stories, doesn't that makes your blood boil?"

"Indeed it is, but being an adventurer should also be dangerous right?"

I think he's not naive enough to believe that being an adventurer is all fun and games without any risk. But it's very common in all kinds of stories to explain that adventurer could lose their life anytime at any place.

I write this chapter while listening to the song called boyhood days by yosui inoue. That explains the title
