“So if Chloe didn’t factor into your decision to leave town, then what did?”
“I miss California. I miss the people and the weather and the vibe. Look, I love Illinois. It’s where I was raised and it’ll always be a special place for me, but it’s not my home anymore. California is.”
“So you’re just leaving?”
“Yes. In two weeks, I’ll be gone. I’ve arranged a transfer back to the L.A. office, and last weekend after breaking up with Chloe, I rented an apartment.”
“Wow,” was the only thing I could manage to say.
He touched my arm. “You should come with me.”
I laughed softly. “You’re full of surprises today, aren’t you?”
“I’m serious.”
