 — Dannis Martell —

Stepping out of the cave, I glanced back one last time. Cackler Prime was a dangerous demon, a high B-rank bordering A-rank monster by itself. The fact that it was here meant this mission was at least A-rank worthy, something I plan to tell Master Makarov when I get back to the guild.

Cackler Prime is a rare monster to come by. The last time one was seen was 7 years ago, when Draculos Hyberion earned his Wizard Saint title by hunting down an archdevil and purging it. The Cackler Prime was amongst the Archdevil's minions.

The Archdevil was labeled as a Catastrophe Level Threat in Ishgar's Hazard Registry, which is a threat index that the Magic Council created to rank beings that are a massive danger to the populace.

The most famous one of course being Zeref the Black Wizard and Acnologia the Dragon King, who are both rated as an Apocalyptic Level Threat. Existences that could threaten the entire world by themselves.

The researchers at the Wizard Council had dubbed the Cackler Prime a rare evolution for the regular Cacklers. An evolution that happens to 1 in a 100 in their species. But I guess I found the actual reason for their transformation. Who knew glowshrooms were a special upgrade food for the little critters?

The Magic Council does have a reward system in place if a mage brings them new information about beasts or monsters. Since Cackler Primes are a pretty big threat for the average mage, sharing this new discovery of mine would be a good idea.

Smiling slightly from the bigger paycheck I'm getting, I tilt my head at something I've been contemplating for a while. I'm 15 years old now, not an adult yet by any means, but I'm getting older. Maybe it's time to get my own place.

Wakaba's is nice, and the old man certainly makes coming home from day to day a bit better. But I do wonder what it would feel like to have a home all to myself.

I certainly have the money for it, the recent months of missions and having spent very little of it had given me a decent amount saved. Not to mention the stipend I'll be given from the Cackler Prime information.

Whatever the case, that's an issue for a future me. After all, what I do know is that it's time for me to get back to the guild. I'm starting to run out of missions after that last batch, time to get back and hoard the best quests for myself before disappearing for another long period of time.

Ah, the joys of a lone mage.

How bittersweet.

[Six days later]

Arriving at Magnolia, I expand my senses to our usual hangout spots. Sighing in relief as I don't sense Laxus or the rest of the Thunder God Tribe anywhere.

They must be on a mission, I realize.

The first thing I did when I got to the guild was to tell Makarov about my recent discoveries. He congratulated me on a job well done and made sure to tell the Magic Council the information on my behalf. The rewards would be sent to my account under his supervision. The master kept dropping hints all the while for me and Laxus to talk to one another, which I pointedly ignored. The old man just sighed at our stubbornness before waving me away.

I guessed he must've had the same conversation with Laxus only to get the same reaction.

The next thing I did after grabbing a bunch of the more interesting missions from the mission board was to go to the library.

After the fight with the Cacklers, I had this weird feeling of satisfaction within me. I didn't know what it was, and it most definitely didn't just stem from me completing a mission all by myself.

I've done a bunch of solo missions when I was 12, this shouldn't be anything special. So on the trip to Magnolia, I took the chance to meditate. It was quite difficult since I realized my own emotions were currently in turmoil, but I managed to push past it.

What I discovered was that I wasn't the one who was satisfied, it was my magic. My magic approved of me killing demons. My sword which was covered in darkness reveled in being bathed in the blood of the Cacklers.

I didn't know that magic could do something like that. Hell, I didn't know that magic could feel things. So that was the reason I was here.

Fairy Tail's library had a large collection of books dating all the way to 100 years ago, the era in which Mavis Vermillion, Fairy Tail's founder and first master, lived in.

When I was still learning my magic back when Makarov had invited me to the guild, this was where I spent most of my time when I wasn't training with Laxus.

If there was anything that would tell of the current condition with my magic, it would be here.

"Dannis! Did you just come back from a mission?" the voice of a girl greeted me as I entered through the doors of the library.

Levy was a face in Fairy Tail that I saw quite often, mainly always reading some kind of book. While she usually does so in the main hall surrounded by Jet and Droy, she always escapes to the library whenever she's tired of their antics. She might only be a 10 year-old girl, but she's also one of the smartest people I knew amongst our generation.

"Hey Levy, don't mind me. Just gonna do some research." I smiled at her as I perused the isles of the library, searching for a book that might have answers.

I saw her smile back at me from the corner of my eye. I could tell from her expression that she's curious about the news regarding me and Laxus, but it looks like she has enough tact to not ask about it.

Picking out a few books that might fit the bill, I take a seat a few tables away from Levy as I start to read, pulling out my Gale Force Reading Glasses as I do so.

Whoever invented these magic glasses deserve all the money in the world. Seriously, the ability to read at super speed has been one of the extra joys in my life.

Now then, onto research we go.

Interesting.

How very interesting.

From the few books that I'm reading, it seems that there are certain old magics that are recorded to possess some form of sentience.

Long ago, magic could be categorized into four types. Celestial, Demonic, Primordial and Draconic.

These four magics existed since they came from a clear source. Celestial magic is magic from the stars. Celestial Spirits and Heavenly Body magic are examples of it.

Demonic magic is self explanatory, since it's a magic that came from demons and devils themselves.

Primordial magic is different since it is magic that is sourced from the very planet itself. The magic of existence, one would say. It was a magic that had existed before humanity was even a thing. Most elemental and natural magics are among this category. The old rumored God Slayer magic also belongs to this category.

Draconic is the newest one, sourced and taught to humanity from the dragons themselves 400 years ago.

However, as time flew by and humans became more gifted in harnessing ethernano, more and more magic types appeared all over the world. Requip magic, letter magic, molding magic, et cetera.

Since then, the four original types were forgotten and a new system was set in place by the magic council that existed then. Holder and Caster became the new classifications of magic in Ishgar, with magic attributes like black and white magic being the more specific classifications to differentiate people's magic.

There was something that I found interesting, some sort of magic called The One. It was simply mentioned in a few books with no details or further references explaining what it was. I put that knowledge on the back of my mind as I continued reading.

For some reason, my magic reacted to the killing of the demons. So does that mean that there is some form of connection with my Darkness magic and demons? Darkness Magic has always been related to demons in general, since most fiends and devils could wield darkness to some degree.

But is there something unique or special with mine?

There has to be, since the fact that only very old magics could have the chance possessing sentience.

I have no idea what any of this means yet, what I do know is that my magic has some connection to demons. It could be good, or it could be bad. I find it quite funny that plenty of people in Fiore fear me since I have been gaining a name for myself.

Darkness Magic is very controversial after all. I've always laughed at the people that called me a demon in disguise for wielding this type of magic. And now here was undeniable proof that I am somehow connected to these demons.

How ironic.

Despite all that, this does give me some semblance of a goal for the near future. Not knowing what one's magic could do could prove detrimental, so I'm going to make sure I have this mystery solved as soon as I can.

Pulling out the stack of papers, I try to see if there are any missions recently that involve demons and- huh? Would you look at that?

[A demon has been discovered in Rackshaw village, hunt down this demon and exterminate it. B-Rank. 200,000 jewels]

Hmm, Rackshaw village. If my memories are right (and it usually is), then it was an isolated village located so out of the way of any other civilizations. Which means there are no trains that would lead to the exact location.

I sighed, usually I'd avoid these kinds of missions since it's a hassle to get to. But it looks like I don't really have a choice this time.

But from what I can tell, there are a few other missions that I could do on my way to the village. Some taking places in locations that are in the same direction of Rackshaw.

It'd take some time, but nothing on the flyer says anything that's urgent. So I should be okay in making a few stops here and there.

Picking up the books and putting them back in spots I took them from, a practice that a lot more people should do in libraries, I look up to see that Levy is still there, surrounded by a wall of books taller than her.

I sweat dropped a bit at the sight, no matter how much of a bookworm I am, it seems I'm no match for Levy in that regard.

"Are you leaving already?" The girl asks as she looks up from her book.

"Yep, I'm gonna go on a mission again. Probably won't be back for a while. Tell the master that if comes looking for me, would you?"

Levy nodded with a smile. "I will. Stay safe, Dannis!"

I smile back as I continue on to the outside of the building. I made sure to say my goodbyes and tell Wakaba that I'll be gone for a few months at least. My guardian just nodded while shooing me away and taking a smoke.

I purposely walked past the restaurant that the Thunder God Tribe always frequents, the one that had my favorite chocolate milk, as I opted to eat at another place. After all, it's always a good idea to go adventuring on a full belly.

AN: Some revelations with his magic. Dannis's magic is not simple by any means of the imagination, I guess this is where the main character mystery comes into play.

Levy also makes an appearance! Probably one of the cooler characters in Fairy Tail tbh. Her magic is so interesting.
