Chapter 76

“Is that blade for me?” I quipped in a shaky voice.

“Thought it might be Raven.”

“What if it had been him?”

He flipped the blade and casually tossed it into the nearest wall. “We’d have a frank talk.”

“With knives?”

“If that’s what it took to get my point across. You made good time. You almost beat your pigeon.”

“Apparently your idea works.” I indicated the cage on the floor by the saddle. “I brought the gray pigeon with me.”

“Good. You can take the two whites when you go back tomorrow.”

“I’m not going back. Not until this thing is settled. They know about us, Matthew. I told Ma and Pa both.”

“How did they take it?”

“Pa already figured it out. It was a pole axe to the head for Ma, but she handled it like she handles everything that comes along. Said for me to bring you back home right now. Not sure if she’s going to take a switch to you or hug you to death.”

A smile touched his lips. “So you were afraid for nothing.”
