Chapter 30

Andre got two glasses for the bottle I’d not yet uncorked. Actually, he brought cups made of pewter. I’m not much of a drinker. Pa always warned our people had a weakness in our blood for alcohol, so he’d pretty well scared us off the stuff. But I managed to keep down a healthy slug. Andre started talking about Otter and the Major. That’s the way he labeled James—the Major. The more he talked, the easier the stuff went down. We were soon laughing and hiccupping over remembrances of the two until a stern-faced little girl came and complained she couldn’t get any sleep.

“If you’re going to drink that stuff, go to the barn.”

Andre beamed at his daughter. “Good idea, honey. Come on, John.”
