Creating a magical crest out of a fallen angel

(O.R.C Clubroom)

Akeno, a buxom beauty with long black hair held back in a ponytail by a yellow ribbon and wearing a Kuoh Academy uniform, placed a hot cup of tea before her King, hoping that it would calm her down.

"Something has to be wrong; the summoning circle should have been activated by midnight at the latest." Her king, Rias Gremory, bit her thumb in worry as she sat behind her desk. She was a beautiful girl with long crimson hair and a heart-shaped face who also wore the Kuoh Academy uniform, which was similarly strained under the girth of her breasts.

"Perhaps this fallen decided to go further than we thought?" Akeno mused with a lightness she didn't feel.

Unlikely. "Eka Yuuma" (Kalawener) probably can't stand humans. "No, she should have killed him by now; the circle should have summoned me, and Rei Nakamura should've been my new bishop by now." Rias ranted, slapping the desk in frustration.

"Perhaps," Akeno started, "he never got the flyer?"

"My familiar saw that personally. He accepted it right after school ended."

"Ah. Maybe he threw it away then?"

"I don't-"

The crimson-haired beauty bit her lip, then sighed.

"It's... possible."

Akeno hummed in agreement. She understood her king's frustration; it was only a year until graduation, and Rias didn't have enough pieces to fight a rating game against Riser and win. That wasn't even taking into account the time needed to train up a reincarnated devil.

Rias continued.

"This is... it's such a disappointment. There was so much potential in him! The magical energy within him was literally rolling off him; I should have had Koneko-chan follow him."

The black-haired beauty sighed; it was indeed a pity; Rei Nakamura was an interesting boy, his magical energy was off the charts for a human, and he would have indeed made a fine bishop.

Despite the fact that this was a disaster, they did manage to recruit Hyoudou Issei, who was suspected of having powerful sacred gear because Koneko said that boy had a strong dragon scent and a sacred gear with a dragon sealed within it was always valuable; even the weakest had useful abilities, not to mention the prestige of having someone linked to a dragon as a member of the peerage.

Pure-blooded dragons were extremely rare, especially those not reincarnated as devils, so it was no wonder that even being tangentially related to one was a symbol of status.

Akeno was torn from her thoughts by a loud groan from her king, who had put her face in her hands.

"Buchou?" The dark-haired girl asked, unsure what else could have gone wrong.

The Crimson King remained silent for a moment, then spoke with a tone of dread.

"I have to tell Sona that I let a student die."

Akeno was torn between laughing at her king's dramatics and flinching at the idea of the Sitri heiress learning that a student in her school had been killed as a result of Rias's actions. Then she realised that the entire plan had been Rias's idea.

"Fufufu."

(Rei's workshop)

Rei clicked his briefcase closed, setting the lock as he did so. He had finished his "in-depth" examination of this fallen angel and had learned quite a bit.

Unlike humans, who usually relied on magic circuits to produce their own mana, fallen angels have been gifted with magical cores, which are nothing but their hearts. Though their autonomy looked mostly humane, they still had some inhumane characteristics, such as a pseudo-nervous system that they used to conduct their mana to different points or junctions.

Unlike magical circuits, which exist in the soul of a magus, this pseudo-nervous system exists within their physical bodies.

Speaking of their physical bodies, they were in a league of their own; though not on the level of even the lowest class of servant, their physical bodies were way above any ordinary human, and it was because mana flowed throughout the body, entering the musculature and the bones, both of which were magnitudes tougher than humans.

It seemed as if mana had an enriching effect on the body while also making her much harder to kill; it was as if her physical body was less important to her survival, allowing her to take normally fatal injuries and keep going.

Unfortunately, it seemed he had overestimated her endurance, as she died during the process while he was studying her magical core.

Well, at least he managed to retrieve the core safely, and that turned into a magical crest. He continually had to pour his own prana and his knowledge into some rudimentary magecraft to stabilise the crest completely.

Magical crests are something akin to storage devices that can record magic, and all this recorded knowledge can be passed along to someone along with this crest, which would also passively generate mana.

He got around 10 magic circuits of D-rank quality, and along with this, he added his own recorded knowledge on the basics of magecraft, such as mana control, reinforcement, and a few elemental spells, which could be combined with light manipulation considering it is made from the core of a fallen angel.

The crest itself was square in shape, and instead of the usual cyan colour, it glowed a light gold colour. He kept it in a magical container unit and preserved it for later use, considering it useless to the current him.

Maybe he could give it to the homunculus that he is planning to make in the future? Or should he make a trade? Or maybe not.

This entire operation did not turn out to be as fruitful as he had hoped, though he did gain in-depth knowledge of magical cores and may be able to materialise one for himself with his true magic.

As for the body, he decided to keep it for himself since the fallen angel's bodily constitution is tremendously different from that of an ordinary human and they have the ability to conduct mana much more efficiently. He decided to conduct some more tests before discarding this body; perhaps he could replicate their body's mana conductive property and use this knowledge in the creation of a homunculus, or even on himself.

Though he learned a lot in the previous six hours, he still didn't get much, such as more information about the moonlit society of this world; frankly, he doesn't know much about the supernatural except that they exist and that there are some demons running this city.

Maybe he should have asked her a few questions first.

"Oh well, I guess I can't be too greedy."

He sighed, removing his coat and throwing it on the swivel chair in the corner of his study room.

He then exited via an enchanted steel door with a briefcase that contained the magic crest and a document that contained the details and blueprint of the magical core that he studied, having already stored Kalawerner in the dimension created by his "imaginary element," where time doesn't exist.

Not that he'd be going to sleep; that was what school was for. No, Rei had planned to start on the creation of a new, improved version of the magical core; he had to start making new blueprints considering he could make tons of improvements in the current one.

A magical core would give him a tremendous amount of mana, even compared to his current 100 A-rank magic circuits that he materialised after coming to this world.

Humans are greedy by nature; after all, they always wish for more.

And Rei is no exception to such things.
