Chapter 14~Awake~

"I think it's a mistake to ever look for hope outside of one's self."

Iris's POV.

As soon as I convinced Devon to go home, the nurse informed me that Dad's condition was stable now and he would be awake in a few hours. She kept persuading both Chris and I to go home and rest. I knew I needed the rest and right now I looked worst than a raccoon, with my not-so-perfect ponytail and my swollen and red eyes due to all the crying.

I am surprised my body can produce that many tears.

After so much begging and bribing, the nurse allowed both of us to visit my dad in his ward. As I entered his ward, my heart ached for him, he looked so distraught, weak, and pale. I sat on a seat beside his bed, while Chris took the seat further from mine. There were so many tubes and wires connected to his body, I was so scared to touch him, and a great pain gripped my heart. To be honest, I was so mad at him for not telling us about his condition. It hurts to see someone you love so much to be going through something like this and yet that person acts like all is well.

I kept on crying and thinking of all the possible scenarios that could have happened if dad eventually went for the operation. I was happy Chris left me alone to think. I didn't know how long I was thinking and crying but eventually, I fell asleep.

Few sleepy hours later...

"Iris! Iris!!" Someone kept poking me on my upper arm, interrupting my sleep and I groan in response.

"Iris!!!" This time the person hit me harder, and my sleepy eyes were wide open.

"What the-- " It was dad, and both he and Chris were laughing so hard.

"Thank God, you finally woke up, I was planning on slapping you." The corner of his mouth turned up while I just gaped at him.

"Dad!!!" I whined.

"Don't you make that sound young lady! and aren't you both meant to be at home? you have school tomorrow."

What is wrong with this man? is he asking me that?

"And who even allowed you here, besides visiting hours are over." He glanced at the wall clock which stated it was 11:06.

"Well, I bribed your nurse," I shrugged. "And you know I am obviously mad at you, dad and here you are pretending like nothing happened, what if you had died?" I whispered yelled, trying to hold back another set of tears.

"I know sweetie, but I did it for a reason, and you see I'm still alive right, you should know your dad is stronger than that." He smiled and I smiled back and hugged him.

"I love you so much, dad."

"And I love you more." He chuckled and I smiled.

"I want a hug too!" Chris chimed in, before joining the hug.

"Okay, you need to go home now, I promise I will be fine, you can both come back after school." He assured. "I want you both to go home now, okay?" Chris and I nodded.

The hospital was quite far from my home, it took us approximately thirty minutes to get home, even though we used Chris's car.

As soon as I get home, I checked on Devon and he was already fast asleep. Chris stayed over so he slept in Devon's room.

Alarm beeps!!!

"Ugh, turn it off!!!" I groaned as I used the pillow to cover my ears from the deafening sound of my alarm.

"Iris, get your lazy ass up, we are going to be late for school." Chris pushed me off the bed, and I landed on the cold tiles making a thud sound. And then it hits me, today is Monday.

Ughhh! I hate Mondays, can't every school week start on a Tuesday?

I stood up in pain and glared at Chris before rushing into the bathroom, I performed my normal routine. I wasn't in the mood to dress up, so I wore a black cropped sweater with black pants and my white Canvas and tied my hair into a high ponytail.

I was about to prepare coffee, but Chris kept horning to get my attention. I ran into the passenger's seat.

"Are you going for a funeral or something?" Chris questioned as he switched on the ignition of the car engine, while I just ignored him.

Gosh! I need coffee as soon as possible.

"Here, thought you might need this." He handed over my favorite coffee which was Frappuccino. I couldn't help but give him a lopsided grin and he smiled back at me.

As soon as we arrived at school, we gave each other a quick hug, before we departed, unfortunately, we didn't have any class together today, so we would likely meet at lunch.

"Omg! Iris, what happened to you?" Lizzy asked, while Treasure just gave me a quizzical look.

"It's a long story, can we not talk about it for now?" I pleaded as I stifled a sigh and they both nodded, mutely.

"So how are you feeling now, you know after what happened at the party?" Treasure asked.

"Well, I am better now. Thanks to Zander, can't even believe I am saying that." I laughed a little and they both smiled.

"Glad you are okay, oh oh we have to go, we have class together," Lizzy said dragging a nagging Treasure through the hallway and I smiled at them before screaming bye.

"Oh God! you look terrible," Aspen commented as I walked to my locker.

"Thanks, girls love hearing that," I remarked dryly and rolled my eyes subtly.

"No! I didn't mean it that way. It is just..."

"Look it's fine, I am not blind, I know I look like a mess, but that isn't something I should be concerned about, I have other things to worry about." I rambled.

"Oh, I'm so sorry, if you need someone to talk to I am right here." He smiled showing his pearly teeth, I was so much envious.

"Thanks, and by the way why ain't you with your boys?"

"Ooh, they are not my boys, they are my guys." He snickered at his statement and I just hissed.

"Whatever, why ain't you with them?"

"Well, they are coming, I just decided to search for a cute Grey eyed lady with the glasses." He smirked at me and pointed to the direction from which they were coming.

"Okay! don't make it weird, umh byeeee." I said and he grabbed my wrists before I could walk out.

"Why are you in a rush?" He questioned, with a slight frown.

"Isn't it obvious, I am trying to get to class on time."

And run away from you guys!

Before he could question me any further I ran away, not before the boys gave me a weird look. I knew it wasn't time for class, I was ten minutes early, so I decided to take a seat at the back to avoid unnecessary attention.

As time went by, the class was occupied, we weren't that much in this class, you know because it's AP Calculus.

Just before our teacher could enter the class, Zander strolled in with his backpack resting on one of his shoulders. He made daring eye contact with me before he took a seat adjacent to mine.

This is gonna be a long day!
