Chapter 61

It won’t do any good, Ollie thought. As Stacy had said, they had no standing.

Sure, they could get a lawyer, try to get custody. But Ollie knew, even as his optimistic heart envisioned it, it was an unwinnable case. Stacy was Addison’s biological mother. She had found God. And it looked like she had managed to find a job and a home too. What court would take Addison away from that to place her with two unmarried gay men?

This morning, which had started off so bright, had turned into the blackest day in Ollie’s life. He couldn’t imagine the depth of Hank’s pain.

Stacy didn’t give up. She took Addison, still kicking and screaming, through the kitchen, into the entryway, and up the stairs.

“Can’t you stop her?” Hank asked.

“What can I do?”

“You’re useless. I hate you,” Hank spat out. He turned and bolted out the door.

“Hank! Come back.” Ollie called after him. “Please!”
