She was lying on the hospital bed with a monitor in front of it. The doctor kept telling her to calm down but every 30 seconds or so there would be hysterical screaming and the sound of loud crying coming from the ultrasound room.
The gynecologist was dumbfounded as she witnessed the hysterical display of the mother in front of her. She had seen her fair share working in this profession for so long but this case was by far the weirdest of them all and the craziest.
She kept telling the mother to calm down as the constant screaming could be harmful for the child in her belly.
The mother on the other hand adamantly insisted that something had happened to her child and that the demons had tried to hurt her child. One moment she would be begging the doctor to save her child and the very next moment she would be taken over by madness and would act like a feral beast. Nothing the doctor said or did could ease her paranoia.
The doctor had to put her under otherwise she could not only have harmed herself but could also have done irreparable damage to her innocent child.
When conducting the ultrasound, the doctor found that nothing was out of place when it came to the baby. Everything seemed normal and the fetus was also developing smoothly.
The doctor then came to the conclusion that the mother might have been a psychotic patient who had been off her suppressants for too long. Either that or it was a case of severe hormonal disorder that was common in pregnancies but almost never to such an extent.
The doctor asked the nurse to contact her relatives to take her home. She gave special instructions that in no way was the lady allowed to go home by herself. Someone had to come and fetch her.
...
It had been a week since their return from Temen-ni-gru and both Dante and Lady had been lounging around in Devil May Cry; Dante's shop for his devil hunting business.
He had officially named it "Devil May Cry" as per Lady's suggestion after their ordeal at Temen-ni-gru.
Dante after seeing the fall of his brother Virgil at the tower had been struck with an immense amount of guilt and sadness even though he tried to cover it up with his easygoing and comedic outer appearance.
It was due to this very reason that Dante didn't want to venture outside anymore. He wanted to deal with his regret somehow before it ate him up from the inside.
While Dante was facing his demons, Lady had her own troubles. Although she had avenged her mother, she had done it by killing her own father no matter how repulsive he might have been. She was in so much pain that she didn't think she could recover from it on her own.
Therefore, the two people who were the most broken from the inside were trying to support each other in order to recuperate from their respective emotional damage. It was also the reason why Lady had continued to stay in Devil May Cry even after everything was over.
"Hey! You lazy bum, get up and eat." shouted Lady, not like a lady at all.
"Could it be you can't wait to see me so you want me to come immediately?" Dante teased in a flirting manner.
"Don't forget whose turn it is to do the dishes today. Otherwise don't blame me if I shoot you in the face." Lady completely ignored the previous comment and continued.
"Fine….fine I know. Do you have to be like that? You are acting like a shrewd housewife again." Dante amusingly said.
As usual Lady continued to ignore him. During this week she had already learned that not responding was the only means to shut his vulgar mouth.
"Dear Wif…" Dante had only opened his mouth while sitting to eat breakfast when a bullet shot into his forehead spilling blood all over his face.
"You still haven't learnt when to shut up", Lady had taken it upon herself to help Dante become more normal. After a bullet in his head Dante seemed more well behaved and sat down to eat his meal peacefully.
It was at that moment that the bell connected to the door of the shop rang indicating that someone had entered the shop. Dante seemed to be nonchalant and kept his focus on the meal that Lady had brought for him. As for Lady, she had gotten up and headed towards the new entrant.
This was their routine. They were used to getting many customers who had the wrong opinion about their business. They thought Dante was someone who drove away ghosts. Such customers had to be turned away patiently which was impossible for Dante to handle without hurting or threatening them.
After talking to the customer for some time Lady returned and said, "The customer only wants to explain her situation to you, Dante. This one is a genuine customer."
"I don't want to take up any job at the moment."
"I think that it would be good for you to get out of this shithole for a little while."
"Hey! How could you say something like that about our home? It is not that bad. I have been cleaning up after myself too." Dante seemed to be dissatisfied with Lady's comment but seeing the current condition of the shop she was not in any way wrong in calling it a shithole.
"GO…" Lady slowly moved her hand towards her pistol while pointing with her finger towards the booth that the customer was waiting in.
How could Dante not understand what she meant? She was threatening to shoot him if he didn't meet the customer. Although he wouldn't die from it, it was still painful and irritating for him.
Not seeing any way to refute her Dante got up holding a piece of waffle in his mouth and moved towards the customer in the booth. He boisterously reached out and sat in the seat directly opposite to the customer.
When Dante looked up from his food he was surprised to find an absolute GODDESS sitting opposite to him.
"You are the esteemed customer. As soon as I saw you I knew we were destined to meet each other. If there are any troubles you are facing, you can comfortably tell me. I will willingly go through a sea of fire and massacre my way through a horde of demons if it is for you." Dante changed his tone immediately seeing as the customer was a top tier beauty.
Beatrice had never expected that the glorious demon hunter she had come to find was this free spirited youth in front of her. If she had not seen Dante's ash grey hair, his sparkling blue eyes, and the absolute same appearance, she could never have associated this youth to that forever stoic and aloof Vergil that she had come to know. She couldn't believe how there could be a set of twins who had a personality that was 180 degrees opposite of each other.
All this time, Beatrice had not gotten a single chance to talk while Dante had been speaking gibberish the whole time.
In fact, Dante was not interested in her story as he truly did not want to take up any job. The reason he had gotten ready to even talk to this woman had been because of the "crazy bitch" living with him. She really would have shot him otherwise.
Beatrice tried to talk by interrupting him many times but Dante was not about to be sucked into this quagmire. No matter how beautiful she was, he was unwilling to get involved in her matters when he couldn't even deal with his own issues.
He continued with his own nonsense not listening to or even paying attention to her protesting voice at all.
When he felt that it had been long enough, he stood up to leave the booth.
It was then that he heard a piercing but melodious voice speak out from behind him.
"I thought you two were nothing alike but I was wrong. You are just as heartless as Vergil." Hearing his brother's name stopped Dante in his tracks.
"I heard that you were supposed to be different; that you were the 'Good' one." The voice continued to rub salt in his wounds tormenting him. Dante turned back around and sat back down on his seat like an obedient kid who had been snubbed by his mother for causing mischief.
"How do you know that name?" Dante was gritting his teeth very hard in an attempt to control himself.
"I met him a while back. It was before he tried to pry open the gates of hell and you heartlessly pushed him over the edge." Beatrice retorted and her voice fell several degrees lower instantly at his aggressive approach.
Dante was shocked to know the extent of information this woman had. It had to be known that other than him, Lady and Arkham there was no one else at Temen-ni-gru where all this happened.
Seeing the shock on his face, Beatrice seemed to have satisfied her vanity. Her tone softened but had the demeanor of someone looking down from a higher vantage point.
"Vergil met me before he went on his power crusade. I was his companion and his confidante for a time. What vexes me is that he never mentioned you even once?" Beatrice showed her curiosity in their relationship in order to dig out some information.
"It's because we both thought that the other one died during our childhood."
"I see. Since that's the case you two should have been happier when you met each other; why did you end up pushing him into hell. No matter what; he was still your brother."
"SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!... What do you know? I didn't pus…" Dante stopped talking midway. He seemed to have realized something. He had been riled up so easily by this woman. She was definitely not as simple as she pretended to be.
Beatrice had already confirmed what she wanted to know. The fear and nervousness hidden deep in her eyes faded slightly after she knew that there was no life and death grudge between the brothers. Otherwise there was no way she could get Dante to help her.
"Your relationship with him doesn't seem ordinary seeing how you know so much about the both of us."
"How could it be ordinary when I am the mother of his unborn child?" Beatrice revealed her relationship with Vergil at this time with slight expectation evident in her eyes.
She wanted to see Dante's shocked face but instead she found that he was mortified like he had lost his soul.
"H..How could it b..be…How is this possible…..No this can't be happening to me" Dante started muttering to himself as if he had forgotten everything else.
"How could this happen? That aloof and anti-social bastard actually got himself a girlfriend before me. Am I cursed? Even Lady shot me in the head when we first met. That must be it….Hmm that's it….No wonder I can't find anyone."
"Are you okay?" Beatrice asked to confirm whether he was in his right mind or not.
"YES" Dante's voice still sounded a little shrill but his soul seemed to have returned to his body.
"So what is it that you need my help for? Got any demon issues?" asked Dante
"Yes, in that sense my issue is the size of the Chrysler building. Mundus himself is after my life and the life of my unborn child who will be born soon. I know that after your brother, only you have the capability to help us. I am begging you to protect me and my child until he is born safely" At some point Beatrice's voice had adopted a pleading tone.
Dante could not refuse after hearing that it was his brother's child. He was unable to stop Vergil from falling into Hell but he was definitely not going to let anything harm his child while Dante still lived and breathed.
